TEA is hiring an Environmental Program Assistant for a 8-week contract for summer 2024. This position is open to candidates between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment and funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

Pay: $20/hour

Location: Combination of remote work and in-person at TEA Office in downtown Toronto

About the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA):

For over 35 years, the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) has campaigned locally to find solutions to Toronto's urban environmental problems. As a not-for-profit organization, we advocate on behalf of all Torontonians for a green, healthy and equitable city.

The Position: 

The Environmental Program Assistant will support multiple TEA project areas by providing business and community outreach, administrative and policy research support for TEA initiatives such as our climate change work, and our work to promote a shift to reusables to reduce waste and single-use foodware in businesses across the city. TEA staff will provide mentorship and training on City Council processes and environmental policies, as well as opportunities to gain experience integrating community outreach into active campaigns. 

The Assistant will attend community events and festivals to promote TEA’s projects. They will also assist the staff team during virtual and in person meetings, workshops and community events with TEA’s partners and community collaborators as needed. They will be responsible for carrying out administrative tasks including data entry and event reporting.

Under the supervision of staff, the Assistant will support TEA projects with background research on local environmental concerns, transcribing notes and summarizing content as requested. They will also support TEA campaign staff with environmental policy tracking, research, and communications related to local climate change and waste reduction campaigns. 

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in activities to connect with communities, neighbourhoods, residents and engage small businesses on environmental issues
  • Participate in scheduled weekly meetings with TEA
  • Assist in TEA projects by conducting background research on local environmental concerns, transcribing notes and summarizing content

  • Assist in organizing virtual or in-person meetings, workshops and community events with TEA’s partners and community collaborators
  • Assist in organizing or updating website content
  • Handle additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Is between 15 and 30 years of age and eligible to work in Canada
  • Experience in coordinating projects and community engagement
  • Strong commitment to environmental justice and anti-oppression
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Proven administrative and program delivery skills.
  • Demonstrated motivation and interest in environmental issues (climate change, waste)
  • Self-motivated and resourceful individual; works well individually and in team settings.
  • Available to work on occasional weekends and evenings.
  • Resident of the GTA 

Assets:

  • Previous involvement in volunteer programs with equity-owed communities.
  • Fluency in a language other than English. 
  • Experience in climate change, environment, or waste related projects 
  • Knowledge of municipal policy issues 
  • Experience in community mobilizing 

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs. To be eligible, the successful applicant must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; 
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial legislation and regulations.
