Expected Hours: Approximately 8 hours per week

Salary: $15.75/hour

Job Summary: The SRC Divisional Peer Academic Mentor (PAM) will meet with current and prospective students within the Divisional discipline to answer any questions that they may have about n avigating Bishop’s resources and opportunities within their divisional field of study. They will also collaborate with their divisional senator and departments to organize academic events. PAM’s will reach out to their divisional students during Orientation Week and throughout the year to promote the Peer Mentoring Program. They will work for the Student Success Centre (SSC), with a focus on student engagement, academic development, and EDI (equity, diversity, inclusion) evidence-based practices in collaboration with the student senators and other student leaders. They will also collaborate with Student Services and their respective division’s Dean, chairs, academic advisors and student senators. The Divisional PAM will be overseen by the SRC Student Success Manager (SSM).

Requirements:

  • Must be a full-time or part-time degree student, in good academic standing, at Bishop’s University, enrolled for the 2024-2025 Academic Year
  • Must be in good standing with Campus Security and Vice-Principal of Student Affairs office
  • Must be available in person throughout the 2024-2025 Academic Year and during Student Success Week (October 21-October 25)
  • Must be available to undergo training in late August (based on all of the PAMs availabilities)

Nature of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for creating and contributing to long-lasting and successful projects aimed at the development of the university’s academic profile, in collaboration with the Vice-President of Academic Affairs (VPAA), the SSM, their divisional senator and various departments
  • Collaborate with the VPAA, SSM, student senators and divisional chairperson to develop and advertise events, handouts, and resource lists
  • Facilitate events and promote student engagement during the Student Success Week
  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of the divisional program, services, policies, procedures and opportunities
  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of the university’s structure, registration deadlines, resources and extracurricular student opportunities
  • Attend all academic events during Orientation Week and aid in facilitating elements of academic events
  • Actively promote the Peer Mentorship program for the duration of Orientation Week for all incoming students
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all mentoring contacts, all the while adhering to the confidentiality agreement
  • Act as liaison between students, the SRC executives, professional staff and chairpersons
  • Adhere to all office policies and procedures, operating out of the Learning Commons as an integral part of the Student Success Centre
  • Work in close collaboration with support services including: the Academic Facilitator, Student Services, the Peer Support Centre
  • Meet with the SSM at least weekly
  • Communicate with the divisional chairperson frequently to learn and adjust their mentoring according to the needs of their department
  • Direct students towards the appropriate divisional advisors with regards to registration process and course selection

They will:

  • Help guide students to the correct academic resources
  • Help students read the academic calendar
  • Take the initiative to help divisional students organize extracurricular projects
  • Organize academic events with divisional faculty
  • Promote and facilitate certain functions of the peer tutoring program

They will not:

  • Act as academic advisors
  • Give students definitive answers on program requirements

Skills Required:

  • Applicants should have strong interpersonal (including empathy, patience, care) teamwork, listening and organizational skills as well as proven initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Have an inclusive, open, creative, and innovative mindset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (French, as well as other language skills, are an asset)
  • Knowledge of the university’s resource structure
  • Experience in team management and leadership is an asset
  • Familiarity with emerging trends in educational development and remote collaboration and learning is an asset
