Overview and Desired Qualities

The University Counsellor is part of the University Counselling Team responsible for all aspects of higher education applications by students in the IB Diploma Programme and for events and programmes to support career guidance and university planning by all students in secondary school.

The University Counsellor should have excellent interpersonal skills and judgment acumen to relate to the students, parents and staff in an informative, empathetic and effective manner. The successful applicant has a wide knowledge of an international student body to advise them on their best-fit college and has experience counselling students on global Higher Education (HE) opportunities. Qualities include writing, speaking, listening, and organizational skills; passion for working with teenagers and their families; awareness of modern career development; and an eagerness to work collaboratively and proactively are desired in the profile of the successful candidate.

The candidate should understand theuniversityadmission processes and the HE landscape across various regions and destinations. Most students at SISHK progress to the US, UK, Canada, Europe and various Asian destinations, including Australia. Thus, the candidate must be familiar with these regions’ requirements and admission systems, especially the US and the UK, standardised testing, and information technology systems and data supporting HE guidance. We especially welcome applicants with knowledge of U.S. universities and with school teaching experience.

University Counselling (UC) Programme

The Education and Career Guidance (ECG) and University Counselling (UC) Programme at SISHK aims to build knowledge, nurture skills, and develop the mindset for lifelong learning in our students and prepare them for challenges in an ever-changing world. At SISHK, university counselling goes beyond ensuring that students receive offers from higher education institutions. We aim to:

  • Build Knowledge – building awareness and understanding of career options, higher education pathways and individual universities to ensure students can make fully informed decisions about their futures
  • Nurture Skills – empowering students by developing a range of attributes such as self-awareness, independence, ownership, decision-making, and effective written and verbal communication
  • Develop Mindset – promoting the belief that students can positively impact their future through active engagement, short and long-term planning, and a combination of aspirational, balanced and realistic thinking

Roles and Responsibilities of the University Counsellor

The University Counsellor, as part of the University Counselling Team, is responsible for all aspects of higher education applications by students in the IBDP and for programmes to support university planning by all students in secondary school. The counsellor should be able to:

University and Career Guidance

  • Increase the profile of North American (US and Canada) counselling guidance efforts beyond the top 50 universities to include other lesser-known universities that are good for the students when assessing fit
  • Guide students on preparing a curriculum vitae, portfolio, writing a personal statement/application essay, cover letter and preparing for an interview
  • Advise and guide students through the application process
  • Support students on and after IB results day
  • Design and run workshops for Grades 7 to 12 students as per the UC curriculum
  • Organize SISHK Internship Program and prepare students for the internships
  • Organize Career Day and career- and subject-specific sessions
  • Guide Grade 8 and Grade 10 students on IGCSE and IB course selection
  • Organize the annual Mock Interview Day

Working with Stakeholders (Parents, Alumni)

  • Conduct UC seminars for parents.
  • Meet with families regarding course selection, university and career planning.

University Relations

  • Attend conferences and promote SISHK to the HE community.

Administration and Event Organisation

  • Coordinate the SAT administration.
  • Compile information and create materials (e.g. website, flyers, emails, circulars, student handbooks, social media posts) to inform parents and students about talks, programmes, and HE fairs held internally and externally.
  • Organise the school’s annual HE Fair
  • Organise HE information sessions/seminars aboutthe universityapplication process, subjects/pathways, anduniversitylife
  • Write references to support applications
  • Provide guidance and support for teachers in writing references
