The Senior Biologist will lead a team working on applied research questions assessing moose populations in Alberta in relation to forest management and landscape conditions. They will also assist on another project focused on building multi-scale habitat selection/occupancy models.

The position consists of desk-based work (data analysis, report writing) as well as travel and significant engagement with shareholders, project partners, and Indigenous communities. This role comes with a high level of autonomy. The Senior Biologist must be an effective problem-solver, be capable of managing their own research project, and managing their own time to meet project deliverables. The Senior Biologist will also help supervise and mentor other staff. There will also be opportunities to develop their own research ideas and analysis approaches that fall within the project scope.

Responsibilities
Project Coordination and Management

  • Coordinate and manage a collaborative research project
  • Manage project budget
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with partners, shareholders, Indigenous communities, and other fRI Research staff
  • Supervise other staff
  • Participate in committees and advisory groups as needed

Data analysis and knowledge transfer

  • Data management and statistical analysis of moose population data, assisting with habitat selection/occupancy analysis
  • Work with the fRI Research GIS Services staff and project partners to collate and integrate relevant spatial data into models
  • Communicate results via peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, presentations at conferences and meetings
  • Work with fRI Research Communication and GIS Services to produce additional communications products (e.g., story maps, infographics, webinars)
  • Travel to meet with project partners, shareholders, and Indigenous communities to develop the research project and to regularly share research results

Essential Job Qualifications

  • Master’s in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related discipline
  • Experience with data management, databases, working with GPS collar and camera data
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing GPS and camera data in R, e.g., RSFs, SSFs, iSSAs, occupancy modelling
  • Comfortable working with spatial data in ArcGIS and R, including mapping and analysis
  • Able to analyze and report on complex ecological data sets
  • Proven record of scientific writing including reports and peer reviewed publications
  • Demonstrated oral communication skills (presentations at conferences, technical meetings), and able to explain complex scientific data to diverse audiences
  • Able to build and lead a highly functioning project team that includes members from industry, government, and Indigenous communities
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Proven ability to work in small and large teams
  • Proven problem-solving skills and ability for independent decision-making
  • Able to meet strict deadlines and willing to occasionally work outside of work hours
  • Strong interest in and/or experience in outreach and communications
  • Valid First Aid and CPR by start date
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence or other provincial/territorial equivalency, with a minimum of 3-years driving experience and can provide a current driver’s abstract that meets the requirements of our insurance provider
  • Eligible to work in Canada (citizen, permanent resident, open valid work permit for the duration of the position)

Desirable Job Qualifications

  • PhD in a related discipline
  • Familiarity with forest management practices and forestry data
  • Extensive experience in engaging and co-developing scientific studies with Indigenous communities
  • Experience working with diverse project partners including governments, NGOs and Indigenous communities

Duration: 3-year term, with possibility of extension

Start date: August 2024

Salary levels for this position will depend on education and experience.

The position is based in in Hinton, Alberta, 20 minutes east of Jasper National Park, and 2½ hours west of Edmonton.
