The Canadian Press is seeking an enterprising journalist who wants to make an impact covering the news with speed and accuracy. Based in Halifax, the successful candidate will join an experienced group of journalists in our Atlantic bureau for a six-month contract to report and edit stories from the region. They will come to work armed with original ideas and creative ways to tell stories. We are looking for a self-starter who works well in a team setting, takes direction and feedback easily and always hits tight deadlines.
General Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Atlantic/Quebec bureau chief, the successful applicant will:
- Report on a variety of assignments, with a focus on general news but ready to jump into the coverage of other areas when necessary
- Produce original content in English for all CP platforms, including online, print, audio and video
- Generate original story ideas, projects and exclusives, paying special attention to under-reported communities
- Take interesting local and regional stories and make them nationally relevant
- Work creatively and concisely under tight deadline pressure in a digital environment
- Come up with new and creative ways to tell stories on all platforms
Qualifications:
- Experience working in a real-time, digital newsroom
- Solid news judgment and writing and editing skills
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with CP style
- English-French bilingualism is an asset
- Superior research skills and familiarity with social media platforms
- Ability to organize time and workflow effectively
- Audio and video skills are an asset
This position is expected to start in June.

La Presse Canadienne est à la recherche d'un(e) journaliste entreprenant(e) qui veut avoir un impact en couvrant les nouvelles avec rapidité et précision. Basée à Halifax, la personne choisie se joindra à un groupe de journalistes expérimentés dans notre bureau de l'Atlantique pour un contrat de six mois afin de rapporter et réviser des nouvelles de la région. Elle se présentera au travail avec des idées originales de reportage et des façons créatives de les réaliser. Nous recherchons quelqu’un d’autonome qui travaille bien en équipe, qui accepte facilement les instructions et les commentaires et qui respecte toujours les délais serrés.
Responsabilités générales :
Relevant du chef de bureau du Québec/Atlantique, la personne choisie devra :
- Remplir diverses affectations, notamment en rapport avec l’actualité générale et les sujets documentaires, tout en étant prête à couvrir d’autres secteurs au besoin
- Produire du contenu original en anglais pour toutes les plateformes de la PC, soit les services en ligne, écrit, audio et vidéo
- Générer des idées d'articles originaux, des projets et des exclusivités, en mettant l'accent sur les communautés sous-représentées
- Reprendre des nouvelles locales et régionales intéressantes à l’intention d’un public national
- Travailler de manière créative et concise sous la pression de délais serrés dans un environnement numérique
- Proposer de nouvelles façons créatives de réaliser des reportages sur toutes les plateformes
Compétences ;
- Expérience de travail d’information en temps réel dans une salle de rédaction numérique
- Solide jugement journalistique et compétences de révision
- Excellentes aptitudes de communication verbale et écrite
- Connaissance du style de la PC
- Le bilinguisme anglais-français est un atout
- Aptitudes supérieures de recherche et connaissance des plateformes des réseaux sociaux
- Habileté à organiser son temps et son travail de façon efficace
- Des compétences en audio et en vidéo sont un atout
