Nous cherchons à embaucher un chercheur en apprentissage automatique chez Microsoft Research (MSR) Montréal. Les candidats doivent avoir le désir et la capacité d’élaborer et de poursuivre un programme de recherche indépendant dans le but d’approfondir notre compréhension des méthodes d’apprentissage profond.

Malgré l’impressionnante précision des grands modèles sur de nombreux points de référence, plusieurs de leurs caractéristiques nous échappent encore. Qu’il s’agisse de déterminer les modes de défaillance, de comprendre la robustesse, la dynamique d’entraînement ou la capacité à transférer des connaissances, nous cherchons à repousser les limites de notre compréhension. Nous accueillons les candidats qui sont intéressés à la fois par des approches plus théoriques et par des études empiriques fondées sur ces modèles.

À propos de l’équipe

L’équipe d’apprentissage automatique du laboratoire MicrosoftResearch de Montréal conçoit des méthodes théoriques de pointe pour élargir le potentiel d’application des systèmes d’apprentissage automatique, dans le but de fournir une compréhension approfondie des principes fondamentaux sous-jacents aux algorithmes actuels et futurs, et d’améliorer de vrais produits au moyen de l’apprentissage automatique.

L’équipe se concentre sur les pistes de recherche suivantes:

  • Concevoir des approches efficaces et modulaires pour développer des modèles faciles à combiner au moyen de nouvelles méthodes pour effectuer des tâches jusqu’ici inaccessibles dans les environnements d’apprentissage sans exemple ou avec peu d’exemples.
  • Publication pertinente récente : ''Multi-Head Adapter Routing for Cross-Task Generalization '' (NeurIPS 2023)
  • Comprendre la dynamique des grands modèles linguistiques et en combiner plusieurs pour apprendre à construire des systèmes plus complexes.
  • Publication récente pertinente : ''Deep Language Networks: Joint Prompt Training of Stacked LLMs using Variational Inference '' (NeurIPS 2023)
  • Avoir une compréhension fonctionnelle des outils d’optimisation courants, en ayant une compréhension théorique de la façon dont les optimiseurs et les ensembles de données influencent la fonction apprise plutôt que ses paramètres.
  • Publications pertinentes récentes : ''Target-based Surrogates for Stochastic Optimization '' (ICML 2023) et ''Decision-Aware Actor-Critic with Function Approximation and Theoretical Guarantees'' (NeurIPS2023)

We seek to hire a Researcher, Machine Learning at Microsoft Research (MSR) Montréal. Applicants need to have the passion and ability to craft and pursue an independent research program to further our understanding of deep learning methods.

Despite the impressive accuracy of large models on many benchmarks, many of their properties still elude us. Whether it is about identifying failure modes, understanding robustness, training dynamics or ability to transfer knowledge, we are looking to push the boundaries of our understanding. We welcome candidates interested both in more theoretical approaches and in principled empirical studies of these models.

About the team

The Microsoft Research Montréal Lab’s Machine Learning (ML) team develops state-of-the-art theoretically grounded methods to broaden the applicability of ML systems, with the goals of: providing a deeper understanding of the core principles underlying current and future algorithms and improving real products through machine learning.

The team is focused on the following research directions:

  • Designing efficient and modular approaches to develop models that are easy to combine in new ways to address previously unseen tasks in the zero-shot and few-shot settings.
  • Recent relevant publication: Multi-Head Adapter Routing for Cross-Task Generalization (NeurIPS 2023)
  • Understanding the dynamics of large language models and learning how to build more complex systems by coupling multiple LLMs together.
  • Recent relevant publication: Deep Language Networks: Joint Prompt Training of Stacked LLMs using Variational Inference (NeurIPS 2023)
  • Building a functional understanding of common optimization tools, theoretically understanding how optimizers and datasets influence the learnt function rather than its parameters.
  • Recent relevant publications: Target-based Surrogates for Stochastic Optimization (ICML 2023) and Decision-Aware Actor-Critic with Function Approximation and Theoretical Guarantees (NeurIPS 2023)
  • Developing teachable agents that can make sense of rich textual feedback and use external tools.
  • Recent relevant publications: Asking for Knowledge (AFK): Training RL Agents to Query External Knowledge Using Language (ICML 2022) and Augmenting Autotelic Agents with Large Language Models (CoLLAs 2023).

We are looking for someone to enhance or complement these research themes, leading their own research agenda.

In addition to these themes, we work in close collaboration with the MSR Montreal’s Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics (FATE) team, addressing questions such as the proper evaluation of language models for harm assessment.
