Shop Foreman (Millwright & Machining)
Full Job Description
Scope:
As one of the key leaders of the Shop Team, the Shop Foreman is accountable for promoting excellence in all manufacturing or production operations: a person who plans, organizes, and controls the operations of the shop business activities; supervises, trains and develops staff; provides advice to management and staff; and performs other duties with a consistent focus on human safety and loss prevention.
The Shop Foreman may also be required from time to time to perform the duties of Machinist and be responsible for setting-up and operating precision metal cutting and grinding machines such as lathes and milling machines to make and repair various products to precise specifications.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Provide leadership to improve health and safety performance by being a role model in safety and demonstrating due diligence through applying the corporate health & safety program elements. These focus on incident prevention through hazard identification, implementing necessary controls, training, education, and audits. Where necessary, take corrective action to address unsafe situations and employee behavior's, uphold the company’s safety rules and procedures, and communicate with appropriate resources to address any hazardous conditions or unsafe employee conduct.
Communicate the company’s objectives by working alongside the Management team to develop department goals. Provide leadership and supervision to staff by assisting in hiring, reviewing performance, and providing feedback, determining training and development needs, and providing coaching and work direction.
Drive technical solutions and provide leadership/direction to shop machinists responsible for job execution. Interact with all functional groups to ensure correct project scope, goals and targets are understood and agreed upon.
Provide and apply consistent support to the company quality initiatives and procedures. Promote and guide the ISO 9001 quality framework to achieve and maintain consistent product quality, focused on enhanced customer satisfaction and continuous improvement.
Assist in managing the department’s budget by controlling, monitoring, and justifying expenditures and manage accordingly. Encourage the expenditure guidelines with the shop team.
Assist leadership with operations of the department by coordinating, planning, setting priorities, and following-up on shop work to facilitate optimum shop performance, including labour/resources/shift requirements.
Assist and complete profitable estimates and quotes for clients.
Assist leadership to resolve maintenance and production-related issues based on business knowledge and, where necessary, seek appropriate approvals to implement solutions within time and budgetary constraints. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities for improvement in costs, quality, and customer service.
Identify and/or provide input on appropriate technology, equipment and methodology used in the operation, or having an opportunity to improve operating results or costs.
Addressing any feedback, ensuring suggestions and concerns presented are dealt in a timely manner.
Responsible for supervising and performing a various spectrum of tasks such as
Base milling;
Portable machining;
Pipe cutting and beveling;
Line boring;
Flange facing;
Stud removal;
Operate or supervise the operation of manual lathe, mills and various other manual shop machining equipment as required;
Read and interpret blueprints, manuals and detailed drawings related to specific machinery or equipment and ensure all work is completed to specified industry standards;
Attend and participate in daily and monthly Health & Safety meetings;
Assist Millwrights in conducting shop millwrighting operations as required;
Collaborate with other trades in completing various mechanical scope;
Maintain a safe and clean work environment;
Various other tasks as required.

Schedule:
Day shift
Monday to Friday at head office in Edmonton, AB
Shift Work - 40+ hours per week
Overtime and field work may be required
Experience :
Minimum of 5 - 10 years experience in a Machinist position.
Minimum of 3 - 5 years experience in supervisory role.
Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration :
Class 5 License (preferred)
Journeyman Machinist certification from accredited post-secondary institution;
Mandatory safety tickets - Overhead Crane & Rigging, Forklift; CSTS2020, WHMIS & Standard First Aid; Leadership for Safety Excellence or equivalent.
Safety tickets considered an asset – Fall Protection & AWP;
Additional education considered an asset: Journeyman Millwright certification;
Knowledge/Skills
Intermediate knowledge of all Office 365 functions (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.);
Advanced level of reading and understanding required such as specialized and technical manuals, detailed operating and procedure manuals, safety documentation, blueprints, drawings and diagrams;
Advanced level of mathematical skills required such as formulas, measurements and calculations on performance and specifications;
Ability to organize, lead, and mentor apprentices and other team members;
Exceptional attention to detail with a strong focus on safety;
Ability to effectively organize and prioritize a variety of tasks and duties and thrive in a fast-paced environment;
Analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills;
Ability and knowledge of estimating and quoting Labour, Equipment, and Materials
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including professional client interactions;
Hold a strong knowledge of ISO 9001 requirements and procedures;
Manual dexterity, motor coordination and physical strength.
