The Black Health team was established in May 2023 as an integral part of the Office of Inclusion and Social Accountability and as the first hospital in Ontario to create a health stream dedicated to Black health, the Black Health team is actively engaged in advancing the important work of addressing inequities in the healthcare system, and improving experiences and health outcomes for Black peoples at LHSC.

There are many inequities in healthcare that exist for Black peoples and in alignment with LHSC’s commitment, the Office of Black Health is working towards identifying and dismantling systemic, institutional and attitudinal barriers. Through consultation and collaboration with Black individuals and community partners, we seek to build trusting relationships so that we can learn more about their healthcare experiences and how we can improve our services to better serve them.

What the Role is

The Manager, Black Health plays a vital role in leading initiatives that are culturally appropriate and responsive to the unique health needs of the diverse Black communities. This position requires a dynamic individual who brings a unique set of skills, competencies, and lived experience to effectively identify and address health disparities and promote equity across the healthcare system. The Manager, Black Health is responsible for supporting the delivery of quality health services through consultation, education, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Black Health, the Manager, Black Health directs, controls and evaluates the delivery of department services. They are responsible for translating decisions of the program leadership into execution, by utilizing relationship management and working with internal and external partners to achieve the necessary outcomes. The Manager ensures their team and department operations are aligned with our mission, vision and values, while working together to successfully achieve our strategic objectives.

This role is accountable for day-to-day department activities, including the management of human and material resources, day-to-day staffing and scheduling, development and support of a healthy workplace, risk and utilization measurements, and facilitation of improvement initiatives and change management, while operating within approved operational budgets and financial guidelines and controls. A major focus of the role is fostering effective working relationships and networks within the team/unit and with other teams across the organization.

LHSC is committed to the principles of hybrid work and may offer this option to employees whose work can be performed in an alternate location, without adverse impact to the operations of the Hospital, inclusive of our Staff and Patient experience. Confirmation of hybrid work options available to you will be clarified upon hire and may be subject to change based on the duties required of your position. Successful candidates will be required to perform work within Ontario and must be available to work on location, as required.

NOTE : This role may be required to be on-call, evenings and weekends on a rotational basis

What Skills Are Needed

  • Understanding of and respect for the cultural nuances, beliefs, and practices within Black communities regarding health and healthcare
  • Experience in advocacy related to policies and practices that promote health equity and address disparities in healthcare access, treatment, and outcomes for Black patients
  • Experience developing and implementing engagement strategies
  • Planning and executing action plans that deliver results and motivate individuals for greater performance excellence
  • Ability to build relationships and partnerships with Black communities' organizations, leaders, and key individuals to better understand community needs and priorities through engagement activities
  • Expertise in communicating with diverse individuals/groups, including patients, families, staff, and community members, to build trust, facilitate dialogue, and promote collaboration in advancing Black health initiatives

What You Will Bring with You

  • Successful completion of a recognized baccalaureate degree program
  • Minimum of 1 to 3 years’ experience in progressively more responsible roles, preferably in a healthcare environment
  • Active members of the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) who have, or are in process of attaining the Canadian Health Executive (CHE) Select certification program is an asset
  • Ability to effectively work with diversity, appreciating that different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics can bring richness to the challenge at hand
  • Fluent and computer literate with computer systems such as email and Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, Excel & PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
