The XRD Mineralogist plays a critical role in providing high quality analytical services and technical expertise to ALS clients. In this position, you will be responsible for all aspects of X-Ray Diffraction mineralogical analysis including sample preparation, instrument operation, data analysis and providing mineral compositions via interpretation of X-Ray diffraction patterns.
Prepare mineral samples for analysis, including milling, mounting, and loading onto sample holders;
Perform X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses on mineral samples following standard operating procedures;
Troubleshoot instrument issues and optimize analysis parameters to improve efficiency and data quality;
Interpret XRD patterns to identify mineral phases and quantify mineral compositions using specialized software for peak identification, phase quantification and crystalline structure determination;
Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing XRD results, including mineral identification, quantitative analysis, and interpretation of mineralogical characteristics;
Liaise with external and internal clients to understand their analytical needs and provide expert advice on sample preparation and analysis techniques;
Provide technical expertise in XRD analysis to internal teams and clients;
Use correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules while ensuing analytical quality;
Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedutes;
Proven experience in operating XRD instrumentation, preferably in a commercial laboratory environment;
Experience with XRD analysis software such as Eva and Topas, JADE, PDF-4 mineral database etc;
Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal;
Demonstrated initiative and judgement to ensure projects are completed on time under minimal supervision;
Focused on quality and continuous improvement, striving to improve processes and/or develop new methods.
Bachelor's degree in Geology, Mineralogy, Earth and Ocean Science or related field;
Minimum of 1 year of experience in mineralogy or mineral exploration, preferably in a commercial laboratory environment;
Minimum of 1 year experience in XRD operation and data interpretation.
