We are pleased to have partnered with Legal Aid Alberta (“Legal Aid”) in its search for its next General Counsel.

Located in Edmonton and reporting to the President and CEO, the General Counsel is part of the Executive Team of Legal Aid, and serves as senior legal advisor to the organization and the rest of the Executive team, providing strategic advice and counsel on all legal matters including labour relations, employment law, privacy, internal policies, practices and rules, and risk. The General Counsel leads the Advisory Counsel Services (“ACS”) team in providing the foundation for Legal Aid’s excellence in criminal, family and immigration law services and will help drive organizational objectives established by the Executive Team and Legal Aid’s Board of Directors.

Legal Aid is seeking a General Counsel who not only possesses exceptional technical legal advisory skills, but who has a strong business acumen and an interest in being part of the strategic leadership and advancement of the organization, collaborating closely with the President & CEO and the rest of the Executive Team. This is a unique opportunity to play a leadership role in an organization that serves the public interest of increasing access to justice, tackling some of the most difficult cases and representing the most vulnerable members of our community. It also represents an opportunity to engage in stakeholder relations and to serve as an external-facing ambassador for Legal Aid as needed.

Candidates we’re seeking

We’re seeking senior legal leaders with:

  • Minimum of 8 years of post-call Canadian legal experience, ideally gained in the areas of corporate/commercial, employment, labour relations and privacy law
  • Significant experience as in-house counsel with legal advisory and management duties at a senior level
  • Demonstrated legal leadership aptitude and/or experience
  • Demonstrated business acumen, and previous experience serving as part of an Executive Team or as a General Counsel is a strong asset
  • Expertise in governance, policy and stakeholder engagement is an asset
