North Shore has immediate opportunities for an Intermediate Wildlife Biologist based out of either our Calgary, Sherwood Park, or Grande Prairie offices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals including Agrologists, Air Quality Specialists, Biologists, Engineers, Foresters, and Hydrogeologists and provide technical leadership and guidance on wildlife matters.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the existing wildlife team and oversee most aspects of data collection, quality assurance, and associated reporting.
  • Manage or co-manage wildlife projects (depending on size and complexity) and provide wildlife support on major projects by liaising with clients, preparing and submitting documents, attending client and regulatory meetings, scheduling tasks, and reviewing budgets as needed.
  • Develop quality scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Develop and execute biophysical assessments which would include:
    • Pre-field planning for projects including safety planning, mapping preparation and equipment preparation
    • Conducting wildlife surveys with a focus on nest sweeps, breeding bird surveys, and amphibian surveys
  • Provide guidance, training (field and office), and direction to junior team members to ensure the completion and accuracy of project scopes of work.
  • Prepare, review, and edit technical proposals, regulatory applications, and reports.
  • Stay current on the applicable provincial and federal legislation and general trends relating to wildlife.
  • Assist with the preparation and development of best practices, standards, and procedures for our clients to mitigate project risks and support operations.
  • Support the growth of the biophysical division by developing relationships with existing and future clients as well as government and regulatory agencies.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of consulting experience related to biology, preferably conducting and managing wildlife studies.
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in biology, environmental science or a related field.
  • Professional Biologist (P.Biol) with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB).
  • Experience designing and leading wildlife programs, including species at risk, wildlife and wildlife habitat surveys.
  • Working knowledge of the Alberta Wildlife Act, Public Lands Act, Species at Risk Act, Migratory Bird Convention Act, and the Master Schedule of Standards of Conditions related to Alberta’s Enhanced Approval Process (EAP).
  • Detail-oriented with strong time management and leadership skills.
  • Strong field skills and the ability to transfer field knowledge to junior staff.
  • Effective technical writing skills, including report and proposal preparation, and the experience to provide technical reviews and edits.
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Experience with client liaison and business development.
  • Current driver’s license and have experience operating a 4x4 truck and off-highway vehicles (ATV, UTV and Argo).

Preference will be given to candidates with experience leading pre-construction nest sweeps, breeding bird surveys, amphibian surveys, reptile surveys, and/or fisheries assessments. Proficiency with regulatory requirements will also be considered an asset. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience.
