Job Title: EALTCP Instructor Program Name: EALTCP Course: 46393 - Developing the Language Skills Start/End Dates: May 23, 2024 – July 25, 2024 Location: Virtual through Zoom and Nexus Time: 6:00-9:00 pm Day: Thursdays Stipend: $2,430
Position Description:

This course will give students the opportunity to synthesize the knowledge and skills gained throughout the other courses and apply it to integrated lesson plans that reflect the communicative approach to language instruction. Students will practice the fundamentals of lesson planning and course planning for a variety of learner groups and setting effective objectives that will be met through instruction. Students will analyze and create activities that target accuracy and fluency in the four modalities using both an inductive and a deductive approach. A variety of assessment and evaluation methods will be explored to help teachers gauge effectiveness of their instruction. Special issues, such as classroom management, ESL literacy and multi-level classes will be addressed. Encouragement of a critical reflective approach to teaching, as well as strategies for professional development will also be built into the course.

Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree required/master’s degree an asset
  • TESL Canada Level 3 required or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3000 hours of experience teaching EAL to adults to a variety of students (in terms of level, demographic, and location)
  • Experience supporting, training, and mentoring new EAL teachers
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching
  • Able to demonstrate effective teaching practices and how to transfer them to an L2 environment
  • Extensive knowledge of past/current EAL/ESL theory
  • Extensive knowledge of learning preferences/strategies
  • Experience working in classrooms using CLT and task- and skill-based teaching
  • Ability to connect theory to classroom practice
  • Knowledge and experience implementing various classroom management techniques
  • Ability to engage students whether they are in class or through alternate delivery
  • Experience with building a teaching philosophy
  • Course preparation and outline in accordance with Program requirements
  • Lesson / lecture preparation
  • Teaching through Zoom
  • Providing assessment and feedback to students on all areas of their development within the program
  • Tracking progress of students studying through alternate delivery
  • Participation in a staff meeting and orientation
  • Preparation and invigilation of examinations
  • Marking and grading
  • Providing detailed feedback
  • Responding to the course related messages in a timely method
  • Creating and updating a class Nexus page
  • Other duties as assigned
