The Laboratory Technician – Mining and Geomechanics Laboratory will serve as the primary contact for expertise in related research fields, ensuring effective collaboration with staff in the Transparent Lab, including those working with various polyaxial testing systems, instrumentations, and the Geomechanics group. This role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities aimed at maintaining seamless operation, ongoing maintenance, and continuous enhancement of lab equipment, electronics, and software. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the technician will be tasked with maintaining, modifying, and upgrading laboratory equipment. Additionally, the role involves organizing scheduled maintenance, designing and 3D printing prototypes and custom parts, and supporting work with x-ray CT scanners. The technician will also apply relevant analytical techniques as needed for evolving research projects, manage data collection, manipulation, and tabulation, and develop software in Python and C++ to integrate mechanical testing equipment with bespoke data acquisition systems.
Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops
# Performing lab experiments that require great precision and attention to many details
# Ensuring that the material needs of laboratory exercises and/or courses are available
# Coordinating routine maintenance of lab equipment
# Providing safety training and ensuring compliance with lab safety procedures and standards
# Serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, experimental procedures, and equipment

Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
Minimum three years of relevant experience in a laboratory setting
Experience with setting up, operating, and calibrating complex laboratory equipment (e.g. polyaxial testing systems)
Experience with designing and 3D printing prototypes and custom parts
Experience with laboratory health and safety protocols and training
Familiarity with programming languages such as Python and C++
Intermediate computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
