Overview:

As an Intermediate/Senior Electrical Substation Studies Engineer, you’ll lead a multi-disciplinary team of engineers in conducting critical power system studies. Your expertise will be crucial in optimizing grid performance, mitigating risks, and enhancing overall system resilience. Here’s what the role entails:

 

The job position will include, but not be limited to, the following:

1. Power System Studies:

  • Perform comprehensive load flow analyses to understand power flow patterns and voltage profiles.
  • Investigate short-circuit scenarios, assessing fault currents and protective device coordination.
  • Evaluate transient recovery voltage (TRV) to ensure equipment withstands switching operations.
  • Analyze harmonics and voltage flicker, addressing power quality concerns.
  • Coordinate protection schemes to safeguard equipment and maintain system stability.
  • Assess arc flash hazards, implementing safety measures for personnel.

2. Interconnection Projects:

  • Collaborate with project teams to integrate new substations into existing grids.
  • Evaluate interconnection feasibility, considering voltage levels, fault levels, and system dynamics.
  • Provide technical guidance during project development and execution.

3. Technical Reporting:

  • Generate detailed reports summarizing study results, findings, and recommendations.
  • Present study outcomes to clients, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders.

4. Resilience and Efficiency:

  • Optimize system parameters to enhance grid reliability and minimize losses.
  • Investigate system disturbances, proposing corrective actions.
  • Stay abreast of industry standards and emerging technologies.

5. Mentorship and Leadership:

  • Mentor junior engineers, sharing insights and best practices.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment, promoting knowledge exchange.

Candidate:

The ideal candidate would have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with EGBC and/or APEGA.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in power system studies.
  • Proficiency in software tools such as PSS/E, ETAP, or SKM.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent written and oral language and communication skills.
  • A self-starter with initiative and good problem-solving skills.

The successful candidate will be supplied with a computer workstation, complete with the appropriate software and applications necessary to do the job. This position would be for an immediate start. The standard work week would be 40 hours, with the hours of work flexible and based on an 8-hour day. This role is primarily an in-office position, however working from home occasionally is permitted.

Requirements:

This position requires that the successful candidate is legally permitted to work in Canada and is eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with either APEGA or EGBC.

 

A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Class 5 Driver's License in good standing as travel to remote work sites and supplier facilities will be required.
