Lancaster House is a leader in providing the latest information on labour, employment, and human rights law through online and print publications and at conferences and workshops across Canada. Lancaster House provides invaluable information to serve the needs of employees, employers, professional organizations, unions, management, and legal practitioners in Canada. In addition, Lancaster House partners with the University of Toronto and Ryerson University to provide professional learning programs in labour law and labour relations.

The primary role of the Program Lawyer is to develop and manage the content of Lancaster House’s live conferences, webinars, workshops, and skills training sessions. The Program Lawyer writes and develops programs, as well as materials for conference panels, workshops, webinars, and skills training sessions. This is a full-time, unionized position. We are currently working remotely and offer a hybrid work model.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develops and manages the content-based aspects of Lancaster House conferences, workshops, and training programs
  • Develops topics and ideas for live conference and webinar programs, workshops, and skills training sessions, based on existing knowledge and additional research of caselaw, legislative developments, academic journals, and trade publications
  • Generates titles for panels, workshops, and webinars
  • Writes programs for live and webinar conferences, webinars, workshops, and skills training sessions
  • Writes and develops program material and analyses of decisions and legislation for live conferences, webinars, and skills training sessions
  • Organizes and directs the preparation of written materials for conferences
  • Liaises with speakers and advisory committees, as well as other experts, on current issues in labour, employment, and human rights law
  • Participates in planning calls with speakers and co-chairs/moderators; modifies materials based on feedback from speakers
  • Attends live conferences and webinars

Qualifications/Skills:

  • LL.B. or J.D. (mandatory).
  • LL.M. with a focus on labour or employment law (preferred).
  • Experience in the fields of labour, employment, and/or human rights law (preferred).
  • Capable of working independently while staying connected with colleagues.
  • Able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them on schedule.
  • Must have a keen interest and broad-based knowledge of labour, employment, and human rights law.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and Outlook and in legal research using Quicklaw, CanLII, and other legal databases.
  • Familiar with and adept at using Twitter, LinkedIn, and other Internet-based tools and social media to keep abreast of current developments and connect with experts in the field.
  • Must be energetic, enthusiastic, personable, and intellectually engaged in the subject matter areas.
  • Strong academic background is essential to perform the many and varied tasks of the position, including researching and designing conference topics and materials and interacting with experts, academics, practitioners, advisory committee members, and speakers.
