Position Overview

Reporting to the Head – Mine Planning and Capital Projects, you will actively participate in the scoping, planning and execution of capital projects related to mining, processing, and dewatering operations. We are also working on a novel mining method” Underwater Remote Mining” for mining Kimberlite pipes. This position will expose you to this novel mining method and will provide opportunities to manage this project as well. Besides projects, job responsibility also involves generating and delivering long range mine plans including life of mine plans, 5 year and one-year plans for both open pit and underground operations. This is a Calgary based position with occasional visits to site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering expertise and input to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Ekati’s long term growth project Investment Studies ensuring cost-effective, engineered and environmentally sustainable designs.
  • Lead Pre-feasibility studies for mining projects and scoping studies for various projects.
  • Ability to install and commission projects.
  • Good understanding of risk management and mitigation of risks in projects.
  • Ability to create and modify pit designs, UG mine designs, waste dumps and other infrastructure designs.
  • Manage and report on budget and estimate costs for short intervals and within an entire capital plan.
  • Participate in the collaborative optimization of the integrated planning scheduling system,
  • Provide expert level support to cost forecasting.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and the Mines Act.
  • Undertake pit optimization studies.
  • Partner with operations to assess and maintain medium term extraction options.
  • Collaborate with subcontractors, internal and external stakeholders, engineers, and key team members.
  • Conduct site checks to monitor progress and quality standards.

Education/Experience

  • BSc/B.Eng. degree in Mine Engineering or geological engineering.
  • PMP certification is desirable.
  • Candidates should be either registered or be eligible to register immediately as Professional Engineer with Northwest territories.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years’ experience and leadership in both technical and operating roles across a range of commodities.
  • 5+ years working as a project engineer in mining environment.
  • 7+ years of experience in mine planning for open pit and underground operations.
  • Strong understanding of budgeting, financial analysis, and economic evaluation.
  • Expert ability in Vulcan, Whittle, Talpac, Deswik, Minesight, XPAC, XERAS or any other mining software suite is essential.
  • Strong communication, strategic planning, project management, financial evaluation and interpersonal skills.
  • A track record in reserve estimation with the ability to act as the Competent Person is highly desirable.
  • Familiar with SAP.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A solid understanding of geologic, geostatistical, geotechnical, mineral processing and economic principles.
  • Previous experience in a leadership role with strong and proven leadership skills complemented by a willingness to learn, to drive change and improve current standards.

Additional Information

The Company provides travel to and from the Ekati mine site out of Calgary, Yellowknife, and other northern fly points.
