Our Approach: Since 1938, we’ve completed more than 12,000 conservation projects. We have directly conserved over 3.6 million hectares (9 million acres) of habitat and we have worked with partners in government and industry to shape policy and management practices to advance conservation outcomes on over 80 million hectares (200 million acres) of lands and waters across Canada. Despite this remarkable progress, our mission has perhaps never been so important as it is today. Across Southern Canada, over 70% of wetlands have been lost and Canada loses an estimated 32 hectares (80 acres) of wetland habitat every day. We are committed to working with governments, business, communities, and landowners to reverse this trend and preserve and expand Canada’s natural wetland heritage.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) position leads financial strategy and management for all of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). The CFO is accountable for the financial administration, is the senior executive which directs all financial services, is the primary accounting officer and the functional leader for financial operations across the business units and is the liaison between DUC and sub-committees of the Board of Directors dedicated to the administration of the organization’s finances, investments, and annual financial audits. The CFO also works closely with Ducks Unlimited continental partners in the United States and Mexico in our shared mission of advancing wetland conservation.

The CFO is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team and contributes to the leadership by reporting on financial performance and advising senior leaders, the CEO, the Treasurer and the Board of Directors on financial strategy, financial opportunities and challenges, financial risk and risk management, financial regulatory compliance, pension and liability management, investment performance and financial performance.

Playing an important, transformational leadership role in DUC, the CFO nurtures and champions a collaborative culture, adds perspective and value to the organization’s efforts to respond to complex business challenges, and integrates financial considerations and effective financial management into business practices, processes, systems, plans and strategies at all levels of the organization.

The CFO ensures that DUC complies with all financial regulatory obligations, supports prudent and efficient operations of DUC, and also supports effective business planning and program delivery. The CFO is also a strategic partner in advancing the conservation, science and education missions of DUC, working with colleagues and business units to support the fulfillment of the DUC mission and to advance continuous improvement in the work of DUC that balances innovation with risk management. The CFO supports revenue generation from multiple sources of funding, including Canadian and American government sources; fee-for-service activities; passive revenue from property assets; fundraising from major donors, community events, and peer-to-peer activities; and brand licensing and the sale of merchandise. The CFO makes sound decisions and provides sage counsel based on data and strives to continuously strengthen and improve financial systems and processes to keep pace with change within and outside of DUC.

This position has the possibility to work remotely across Canada; however, preference would be for the successful candidate to reside in Manitoba.
