You can learn more about Li-Metal at SummaryThe primary function of the Research & Development Scientist is to work with different scientists and engineers to prepare and conduct various R&D and material characterization tests. The main duties include setting up apparatus/equipment for various experiments, conducting the experiment with the area engineer/scientist, recording and analyzing the results. The Research & Development Scientist will be primarily responsible for two streams of analytical work: Battery testing of the anode product and material analysis.The Research & Development Scientist will work Monday - Friday at Li-Metal’s head office & R&D facility located in Markham. The role will involve intermittent travel to Li-Metal’s anode pilot production facility in Rochester, NY. We want a dynamic individual who is excited to join a fast paced growing company and support our efforts in being the leading supplier of critical battery materials for next gen battery developers. Job DutiesUnderstand procedures for laboratory equipment maintenance and operation (this should include titration setup, ICP equipment, SEM, Keyence optical microscope etc.)Run wet chemistry analysis like titration, acid digestion, ICP sample preparationPerform sample preparation tasks for material characterization and electrochemical testingBuild coin cells and run electrochemical testing including cell cycling analysis, surface analysis and defect characterization Use specialized laboratory equipment (ICP, Glovebox, SEM) and machinery when conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing samplesSet up sample production and testing programs according to lab SOPsMaintain conditions of characterization equipment and inert-atmosphere gloveboxPerform routine and non-routine tests and analyses using the appropriate technical equipment and instrumentsPrepare and run various chemical and electrochemical experiments, calculate test results; log and report results Perform quality control and calibrate equipment if necessaryMaintain equipment in proper working order and maintain a clean work areaTroubleshoot and resolve issues with equipment when necessaryMaintain cleanliness of the laboratory and manage hazardous waste storage and pickupQualifications:3+ years of relevant experienceCompletion of Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Assistant certificate program from a recognized institution preferredA minimum 3 year college diploma or university degree in Chemistry or another relevant field preferred Cell building and testing experience preferred Experience with laboratory analysis equipment like SEM, optical microscope etc. Core Competencies:Rapid learner and self-motivated contributor who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative start-up environment.Analytical and numerical skills: ability to perform mathematical calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in different units of measurement; ability to use concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratiosStrong capability in Microsoft Excel for data collection and processingExperience with optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and other surface characterization equipment is an assetExperience with electrochemical testing of coin or pouch cells is an assetExperience working with lithium metal or other combustible metals is an assetLifting of loads with the team may be required periodically; Must be comfortable with bending, reaching, pushing, pulling and overhead reach in accordance with ergonomic safety practicesEnthusiastic, personable, and professionalStrong professional integrity, dependability, and punctualityWell organized, flexible, and comfortable working under pressure with multiple deadlinesDiligent record-keeping and data-entry skillsWhat’s in it for you?Competitive salary and benefits package.Opportunities for career growth and development in a dynamic and innovative environment.A supportive culture committed to employee well-being and continuous improvement.We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment, and we welcome and encourage applications from people with disabilities and people with diverse backgrounds, identities, and cultures.
