Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.The clinical manager within the Neuromodulation program is currently seeking a Full-Time Registered Practical Nurse, Neuromodulation. The purpose of this role is to provide nursing and mental health services within a comprehensive clinical program for Neuromodulation therapies by providing nursing expertise in the provision and monitoring of complex psychopharmacological interventions for individuals with a serious mental illness living as an inpatient or in a community setting.For information about funding incentives for nurses, housing, orientation and other employment-related information please follow this link to our employment web page. Join your team - Waypoint (waypointcentre.ca).KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:Assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, modifying and recording therapeutic treatment strategies, patient treatment responses and general health issues within the Recovery Plan of Care to meet patient Neuromodulation goals.Providing point of care and assistance to physicians throughout the course of ECT administration, including pre-op medical and laboratory workup, peri-anaesthetic care/recoveryProviding health teaching to patients and significant others as well as inpatient and outpatient health care providers.Providing TMS treatment delivering the prescribed parameters and monitor the patient throughout the treatment.Development of a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship utilizing nursing and other theoretical or practice frameworks e.g. psychosocial rehabilitation, counselling, health teaching; administering and monitoring medication, while recognizing the need to consult with a registered nurse when care needs are unpredictable and more complex.Providing individualized and standardized assessments and planning, monitoring and evaluation of patient outcomes in collaboration with medical lead ECT, prescribing psychiatrist and other inter professional team members including in-patient and outpatient program clinicians.Contributing to a safe, therapeutic environment through awareness of the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards and program/facility wide policies and procedures and mandatory training; maintain a safe environment by the secure storage of hazardous or dangerous equipment and supplies; direct supervision of forensic patients for the service and equipment; ensure education and training for emergency support is current.Observing, assessing, recording, and reporting patient condition; evaluating progress and modifying plans as appropriate; assessing patient risk to self and/or others; consulting with a registered nurse when care needs are unpredictable and more complex; participating in quality improvement activities to facilitate changes in nursing practice and inter-professional care.Supporting the orientation and mentoring of new staff and students, supporting team members’ learning goals; engaging in reflective practice and continuous learning designed to improve the application of knowledge, skill and judgment in the provision of patient-centered care.Maintaining TMS machine and associated supplies.Maintaining all educational requirements for duties, and obtain mandatory education regarding various Neuromodulation treatments that are added to the program as determined by Waypoint.Performing all work at all times in compliance with all hospital policies and procedures and legislation (Occupational Health &Safety Act, Fire Code, WHMIS, etc.) relevant to health and safety, security (including relational/therapeutic security) and potential risk hazards, and in particular, “duties of the worker” as defined in Section 28 of the OH&S Act.Manager has the right to assign additional responsibilitiesREQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:Current registration as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.Valid certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)Valid IV and Phlebotomy certificationPeri-anaesthetic certificationPatient safety in hospital programs relevant to their work environment, policies and processes and active participation in program-based initiatives focused on enhancing patient safety.Physical assessment and care requirements and psychiatric nursing theory, nursing practice and forensic mental health to provide therapeutic nursing services to patients along the continuum of care from predictable to unpredictable and complex through the development, implementation, evaluation and modification of patients’ plan of care and recognizing the need to consult with a registered nurse for those patients that are more complex and unpredictablePsychiatric medications including generic and trade names, side effects, and current treatment modalities appropriate to the patient populationMedication practices in order to process patient orders and administering medication by various routes within the registrant’s scope of practice, i.e. oral, intramuscular, and subcutaneousUnderstanding the specialized needs of patients receiving Electroconvulsive therapy, Transcranial magnetic Stimulation therapy, and other neuromodulation therapies.Emergency patient care procedures as taught in Emergency First Response, Crisis Intervention and fire procedures to promote coordinated and consistent practices in response to emergency events, i.e. Code Blue, Code White, and Code RedRisk management policies and tools in order to assess risk management activities (e.g. direct supervision of forensic patients)Understanding the program and hospital policies and procedures in order to practice within the expected standards of the organizationContribute to the Recovery Plan of Care and fulfill professional documentation responsibilities according to facility, College of Nurses of Ontario and legislative standards;relevant sections of legislation, i.e. Mental Health Act, Regulated Health Professions Act, Health Care Consent Act, Criminal Code of Canada and professional standards to ensure compliance and consistency in provision of patient careOngoing knowledge of Clinical assessments, such as the HAMD17 and MoCAInterpersonal skills to negotiate elements of the plan of care with the patient and/or significant others, to encourage involvement and compliance with the plan of care and to promote learning and achievement of patient goals;
