We recognize that work/life separation is essential for people to bring their best to the job, and we prefer a low-meeting environment.About the RoleAs a research lawyer with Alexi, you’ll help some of North America’s top lawyers figure out the answers to their most challenging legal questions. Each day will be different, as you’ll be researching the law in a variety of practice areas and jurisdictions. You will primarily be responsible for researching and writing Pro Memos with the assistance of our internal AI tools and in accordance with our style guides. However, you may also be asked to assist our AI scientists and engineers with special projects requiring legal domain knowledge, and will regularly evaluate our Instant Memos. As a Research Lawyer, we’ll expect you to:Research complex legal topics, sometimes in unfamiliar practice areas or jurisdictions;Craft concise and accurate memos on discrete points of law; Diligently follow our style rules;Consistently meet deadlines; Provide qualitative feedback on Instant Memos; andAssist with other special projects as needed.Your Qualifications:Bar admissions in at least one Canadian province and one American state;Law degree;Exceptional legal research and writing skills;Willingness to research the law of any jurisdiction in the US or Canada;Interest in conducting legal research on a wide range of topics;A solid understanding of the legal process;Strong attention to detail;Comfort with ambiguity;A love of learning new things;A team player who enjoys a collaborative environment;Reliable and secure internet access; and,Comfort using and learning technologies like Google Meet, Zoom, Slack, Google Docs, legal research databases, search engines, Internet browsers, etc.You’ll stand out if you:Have prior experience as a research lawyer;Have litigation experience;Have experience in legal publishing, journalism, or other writing-related fields;Are admitted to the bars of multiple jurisdictions;Are interested in working an unusual schedule;Live in the Greater Toronto Area, and are interested in coming to our new downtown office a couple days a week;Are an early adopter and a fan of technology; and/orHave at least a rudimentary understanding of AI and how it works.Compensation and Benefits:A competitive salaryEquity incentive planHealth/dental benefits planAnnual company retreats4 weeks of annual vacationFlexible hours and fully remote (an office in Toronto is on our roadmap)The Selection ProcessThis is a non-traditional and writing-focused role, so we welcome cover letters explaining your interest and demonstrating your abilities. If you are successful at the interview stage, you will be asked to research and write two memos (one on American law and one on Canadian law), each on strict deadlines, for which you will be paid a flat rate of $250 CAD per memo.
