Position Summary:   

Under the direction of the Operations Manager or designate, the Environmental Technician is responsible for assisting with a range of activities including, but not limited to, developing field sampling programs, creating and maintaining databases, researching, editing, and preparing technical reports, assisting with coordinating and facilitating public events, development and maintenance of databases and performing technical and analytical tasks.


Key Duties Performed:

  • Assist in the continuing development of water quality sampling programs by collecting samples, analyzing data and creating reports focused on results.
  • Track and trend real time water quality data at the City’s pumphouse and complete routine maintenance and calibrations on water quality sensors.
  • Monitor various water discharge volumes, climate data, snowpack volumes and groundwater levels to assist with management decisions and drought and flood preparation.
  • Manage and maintain hydrometric stations in the Dawson Creek watersheds by completing discharge measurements, surveys and data tabulation in order to create and maintain stage discharge curves.
  • Manage and maintain climate stations and the Water Treatment Plant by ensuring equipment is calibrated and transmitting accurate data to real time web-based platforms.
  • Complete work, maintenance and legislated reporting.
  • Complete dam inspections, collect slope inclinometer and vibrating wire readings and update dam safety documents as part of the dam safety requirements for the City’s raw water reservoirs.
  • Facilitate the transfer of technical information among municipal, regional and provincial resource agencies, watershed groups and active stakeholders.
  • Work with groups to promote water conservation, water quality protection, floodplain management, storm water management, etc.
  • Encourage agencies and landowners to collaborate in watershed initiatives and inform them of the technical resources and funding opportunities that are available.
  • Assist in on-going source water protection work including resource inventories, land use information and available water quality assessments to identify existing and potential hazards.
  • Prepare reports as requested.


Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:

  • A degree in Natural Sciences (Environmental Science, Hydrology, Geography, Natural Resource Management, Soil Science etc.), OR completion of a technical diploma in the environmental field with two years of applicable experience.
  • Holds a valid driver’s license.
  • Experience towing a trailer, driving on resource roads and operating all-terrain vehicles and boats.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and calibrate monitoring equipment.
  • Ability to traverse difficult terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with British Columbia environmental laws and regulations, land use practices, source water protection and best management practices.


Desirable Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Applied knowledge of and/or demonstrated experience with technical skills required for field work (Flow gauging, water quality sampling, slope inclinometer readings and climate stations).
