Position Summary
The Student Advisor is an in-scope position reporting to the Manager or designate and is primarily responsible for providing academic and career counseling services to current and prospective students. The Student Advisor is also responsible for student recruitment and to act as the first personal contact to those students accepted into College programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Student Advisor has a range of duties and responsibilities including, but not limited to, the following:
- develop and present academic advising and career counseling sessions to meet student needs.
- track and process college program applications, contact prospective students and provide advice on funding options.
- create acceptance letters for each program to be uploaded in the application system.
- create program bulletins and send to the Program Coordinator for approval prior to distribution.
- assist students in dealing with college systems and procedures.
- advise registered students of program options (e.g. prerequisite courses), which requires maintaining knowledge of course and program curriculum.
- empower students to take control of their educational journey.
- foster an adult education experience on campus.
- develop and implement an integrated recruitment plan, and represent the College at various events including, but not limited to, information sessions and fairs.
- refer students to appropriate community resources, information, and services.
- assist prospective students by providing information on programs, funding sources and career planning.
- assist coordinators, instructors, and students with the student discipline process.
- promote College programming and activities in (e.g. high school visits, career symposiums).
- record and submit statistical data on monthly activity to make assessments on future services.
- provide timely reports to the Manager and designates.
- liaise with external agencies with regards to funding procedures, referral procedures, housing application process, etc.
- deal sensitively, responsibly, and calmly with students who present with serious medical, social and psychological issues, and refer to appropriate care.
- maintain accurate student records and ensure academic advising sessions are properly documented.
- perform other responsibilities and duties as may be assigned to contribute to a positive experience in College programs, services and activities for prospective, current and former students.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Occupying a key role, the Student Advisor should bring the following attributes to the position:
- ability to maintain strict client trust and confidentiality.
- previous experience in counselling would be considered an asset.
- excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills.
- awareness of resources to provide accurate and timely information to clients.
- proven ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Proficient with word processing, spreadsheets, and career counseling software.
- Knowledge of/involvement in northern Indigenous communities would be considered an asset.
- the ability to speak Cree, Michif and/or Dene is a definite asset.
Education and Experience
In addition to the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed previously, the Student Advisor has:
- a relevant bachelor’s degree
- two (2) years of relevant experience
Additional Requirements
- must be prepared to schedule hours of work according to the demands of the position including evenings and weekends when necessary (ie. field hours).
- must possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel, including overnight stays, air travel, and travel on gravel roads.
- A criminal records check including a vulnerable sector check is a requirement of the position.
