We are seeking a Senior Enterprise Architect who is responsible for ensuring that Aviva Canada’s business strategy is supported by an appropriate technology architecture to achieve its goals. Aviva has embarked on a journey to build a next generation data platform to support the growing needs of business intelligence and the strategic advantage of sophisticated analytics.

You will lead the effort to craft the vision, strategy, and transformation roadmap for Aviva’s Data Architecture including migration to the Cloud and establishing the pipelines, data lake, data marts and specialized data repositories vital to support reliable financial and regulatory reporting as well as advanced data science needs.

The success of this role relies on a balanced mix of technical, business, and interpersonal skills; the ability to understand, establish credibility with and bridge the communication between business users, data scientists and development teams, and the leadership to drive continued growth towards the strategic architecture direction.

What you’ll do

This is an exciting and evolving role at Aviva Canada as we are launching multiple data transformation and cloud transformation projects and programs. The ideal candidate would be a progressive individual who has the ambition to craft and execute a cutting edge data strategy for Aviva Canada and architect a state of the art enterprise solution to fulfill the fast-expanding data and analytic demand to enable outstanding customer experience and business growth for Aviva. As is a leadership role, you must bring a previous background in management / leading a team. You will partner with business and IT leaders to develop, maintain, and execute a modern Enterprise Data Strategy as part of the overall IT Strategy.

  • Responsible to partner with business and IT leaders to develop, maintain, and execute a business/IT aligned Enterprise Data Roadmap following Aviva’s Business Strategy and Enterprise Data Strategy.
  • Will also conceptualize data ideas with the business and IT to incubate projects / programs and ensure strategic roadmaps are being followed.
  • You will act as a critical partner and an ally to the Data Governance function in governing the usage, retention, privacy, security, and quality of data across the enterprise.
  • Review project solutions focusing on the data domain to provide mentorship and ensure solutions are following architecture principles, standards, and patterns.
  • Drive efficiency in data acquisition, organization and delivery to data consumers.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to data solution architects and delivery teams assigned to projects to ensure conformance to strategy, roadmap, standards, and patterns.
  • Provide architecture solutions for strategic programs focusing on the data domain when required. Need to be able to apply data solution components and integration techniques, according to different data processing stages, and be able to articulate the purpose, limitation, and benefit of the approach.
  • Provide Data Architecture leadership over Data Transformation programs, focusing on establishing modern, secure, integral, and auditable data pipelines and providing transitional architecture to ensure smooth transformation.
  • Provide Data Architecture leadership over Cloud Transformation programs. Familiar with data operation and integration in the AWS cloud and the relevant cloud technologies.
  • Embed innovation through Data Architecture practice to advance the technology capability of the company. Perform PoCs and evaluation of new technology when required.
  • Partner with architects from multiple international markets including the Aviva Group architects to contribute and influence the establishment of group standards.
  • Ensure security is at the top of every aspect of the data domain and data architecture.
  • Own all applications sitting in the data domain from the architecture perspective. Responsible for making sure each application has a proper application lifecycle, disposition in the strategic rating, and an up-to-date currency roadmap.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining architecture standards & patterns in the data domain.
  • Contribute to the Enterprise Risk & Controls operations. Responsible for meeting the architecture owned control targets and fulfilling control requirements to ensure our operations are secure and the customers’ data is well protected.
  • Active participation in the Community of Practice to share knowledge, encourage innovation, improve processes, and develop best practices.

What you’ll bring

  • A Bachelor degree in Information Technology or related field
  • 10 years of IT experience with a minimum of 3 years dedicated to architecture work or leadership role focusing on data
  • Superb communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong consultation and presentation skills
  • Excellent technical and analytical skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Good leadership and motivational skills.
  • Experience in modeling and graphic representations.
  • Good vendor leadership skills
  • Basic project management understanding
  • Experience in the insurance industry is highly preferred
  • Specialist in Data Integration and Data Architecture; Understand data modeling.
  • Strong knowledge in the following technology areas:
  • Data Lake and Data Marts
  • RDBMS & NoSQL
  • BigData Platform
  • Master Data Management (MDM), Metadata Management, Data Governance, Data Retention, Data Quality, Data Reference and TDM
  • Understand reporting, analytics, planning, and master data management requirements
  • Experience in building new Data Lake processes is considered a strong asset, working experience with data platforms considered an asset (Snowflake, Hadoop, etc)
  • Prior experience in establishing enterprise Data Warehouse (or EIM) and Data Analytics platform
  • Architect/design data pipelines and how data will flow through the enterprise
  • Maintain a repository of data architecture/applications
  • Develop measures that ensure data accuracy/integrity/accessibility
  • Certified in TOGAF and AWS/AZURE/Google-Cloud is considered an asset
