Our client in the public sector is seeking a Chairperson for their Pension Committee. In this role, you will be responsible for providing leadership and oversight to ensure effective management and governance of the pension plans.


This role is a member of the executive team and reports to the Board of Trustees. You will be responsible for hosting meetings, overseeing the board of trustees, and reviewing and making adjustments to pension plans. The pension plan includes defined benefit and defined contribution options.


The ideal candidate will possess prior experience in serving on a pension committee, overseeing jointly sponsored and/or unionized pension plans, and a solid grasp of fiduciary responsibilities and pension governance issues. Government background and experience with defined benefit plans is required.


Location: Surrey or Kelowna (Travel required between locations for quarterly meetings)

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing literature on pensions and investments, plan documents, reports, minutes, and correspondences.
  • Chairing Trustee meetings, supervising agendas, presiding over meetings, and reviewing/editing meeting minutes.
  • Oversight of pension plans, reviewing progress of administrators and service providers, and supervising tasks appointed to trustees.
  • Assisting or intervening to keep tasks on track.
  • Reviewing governance processes and suggesting improvements.
  • Providing oversight for conducting and reporting periodic assessments.
  • Ensuring materials prepared by advisors are relevant, well-researched, useful, and clear.
  • Supervising contract negotiations with major service providers and negotiating directly with them if required.
  • Coordinating and liaising with parties, plan administrators, and advisors.
  • Responding to policy questions regarding the plans.
  • Performing specific tasks as assigned by the trustees.
  • Working towards achieving consensus at trustee meetings.


Requirements:

  • Previous experience serving on a pension committee.
  • Experience managing and providing oversight of jointly sponsored and/or unionized pension plans.
  • Ability to provide leadership and motivate others.
  • Strong communication skills and proven ability to work collaboratively.
  • Understanding of fiduciary responsibilities and pension governance matters.
  • Some level of knowledge of actuarial matters, pension investments, and pension law.
  • Ability to travel between Surrey and Kelowna for quarterly Trustee meetings
