Breathe BioMedical (BBM) is a medical technology company focused on developing a simple, accessible and non-invasive breath test for early-stage breast cancer. Breath analytics involves the collection, processing, and analysis of breath samples to identify biomarker patterns associated with specific diseases. BBM is located in Moncton, New Brunswick and its US subsidiary is in Boston, Massachusetts. Student interns are a vital part of Breathe BioMedical’s development. They are recruited to work on specific projects based on their skills and education levels. Projects will allow interns to complete tangible deliverables that both advance the companies development goals and compliment the students’ learning objectives. 


Internship Details:

Start Date: Monday, May 5th, 2025

Duration: 4 or 8 months

Location: Remote

Compensation: Based on experience and skill level of applicant

Hours/Week: 37.5

 

Breathe BioMedical’s Technology

Breathe BioMedical’s platform technology has sensitivity to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the breath down to the parts per trillion. The platform is comprised of three (3) proprietary devices, a Breath Sampler to collect breath, a ‘Spectrometer’ to process breath samples and MLA software that analyzes raw spectral data from the Spectrometer to identify the presence of disease. The Breath Sampler is a portable tabletop device used to collect alveolar air from subjects quickly and efficiently and concentrate VOCs from alveolar air into a thermal desorption tube, which can then be transported to a central lab for analysis. The Spectrometer is a highly sensitive device into which a breath sample-filled sorbent tube is loaded. The VOCs in the sorbent tube are mobilized through application of standard heating protocols and injected into the ring down chamber for analysis. The Spectrometer uses three advanced infrared lasers to probe the VOCs’ optical absorption properties.

 

Responsibilities

  • Work with breath-based spectroscopic data to develop models for disease detection.
  • Implement and optimize machine learning algorithms for classification and feature extraction.
  • Analyze large datasets, apply statistical methods, and improve data preprocessing pipelines.
  • Collaborate with scientists to translate research into actionable insights.
  • Gain exposure to the intersection of data science and healthcare.

 

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a degree (BSc, MSc, or PhD) in a STEM major (e.g., Physics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics).
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and Python.
  • Experience using SQL.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with applied statistics or machine learning, including topics such as supervised and unsupervised learning techniques, deep learning.
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).
  • Experience with data analysis frameworks (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Seaborn).
  • Experience with Power BI for creating, customizing, and updating reports.
  • Passion for AI in healthcare and ability to work independently.
  • Background in data analysis, statistical modeling, and signal processing is a plus.
  • Familiarity with spectroscopy and agentic AI is a bonus.


Eligibility to work in Canada

  • An applicant who receives an offer of employment must be eligible to work in Canada on a regular full-time basis without restrictions on their start date. Proof of eligibility shall be in the form of a Canadian birth certificate, Canadian passport, Canadian citizenship certificate, Canadian certificate of permanent residence, Canadian open work permit or receipt from Immigration Canada of an application for a post-graduate work permit.
  • Proof of eligibility must be current and valid (not expired, cancelled or voided). Proof of eligibility will be required if an offer of employment is made.
