The Recreation Therapist is responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of therapeutic recreation intervention for a select group of patients. Work involves integrating therapeutic recreation knowledge in the provision of activities Therapeutic activities provided by the Recreation Therapist include the use of the on-site therapy pool. Services provided include consultation and community outreach. The Recreation Therapist assesses clients in relation to therapeutic recreation and functions as a member of an interdisciplinary team.


What you’ll do

Plan, implement and coordinate goal-oriented recreation activities for assigned patients. Plan and implement goal-oriented aquatic sessions for assigned patients, in collaboration with Recreation/Aquatic Therapists. Conduct therapeutic recreation assessments, intervention plans, patient charting and reporting. Participate in and attends interdisciplinary team conferences and patient rounds. Participate in the quality assurance activities of recreation services provided by providing input to the development, implementation, and evaluation of written procedures and standards, development of assessment forms and patient materials. Plan appropriate recreation outings in the community for patients. Accompanies and transports patients in the hospital vehicle and performs delegated care tasks such as medication administration and tube feeds as needed according to established policies and protocols. Provide therapeutic recreation consultation services to patients and related reports. Provide work direction to Recreation Assistants and volunteers as assigned.

What you bring

Qualifications

Bachelor in Therapeutic Recreation or equivalent from a recognized program – combination of a Therapeutic Recreation Diploma and Degree in Child and Youth Care). Eligible for the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (CTRS designation) Two (2) years of recent related experience. Valid Class 4 Driver’s License. Eligible for professional membership in the Therapeutic Recreation Association and the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association

Demonstrated skills in the areas of recreation program planning and leadership. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in groups, one-on one and in writing. Demonstrated ability to assess and interact with patients and families by applying knowledge of therapeutic recreation. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work. Demonstrated ability to teach adults and children. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment. Ability to travel. Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports. Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019). As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
