Position Overview

The staff and skill mix initiative is to objectively assess patient care needs and determine the most appropriate staff to meet these needs. Assessments in the staff and skill mix initiative go beyond the number of beds on a unit and focus on the patient characteristics and care needs as well as the education and experience of staff providing care. Using evidence informed tools and processes, patients will be assessed for their acuity, dependency, and risk for negative outcomes as well as the stability, complexity, predictability, and intensity of their care needs. Patient needs will be considered within the context of the care environment and staff compliment to promote to improved quality of care and patient outcomes.

The Assessor – Staff & Skill Mix Initiative position provides non-licensed nurses an opportunity to participate in a large scale health care initiative to improve patient care in acute care settings. The Assessor utilizes critical thinking and clinical judgment skills acquired through years of nursing service to assess *patients using a standardized evidence informed tool.

Assessment and data collection are performed after training and under supervision of the Service Delivery Organization (SDO) Project Team Lead. The Assessor is accountable for assessing patients according to standard criteria. The Assessor is responsible for seeking consultation and guidance as needed to ensure inter-rater reliability of assessments.

* Patient means an adult or child who receives or has requested health care or services from a Regional Health Authority and/or Shared Health, and its health care providers or individuals authorized to act on behalf of them. This term is inclusive of residents, clients and outpatients.

Experience

Previous demonstrated competencies in clinical nursing practice to provide safe, quality nursing care.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

Previous completion of an approved nursing education program.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

No current nursing licensure required. 

Qualifications and Skills

Ability to work as a member of a team and request guidance and consultation. Accept direction and guidance and constructive feedback. Critical thinking skills including clinical judgment, problem-solving, and evaluation skills reflective of level of formal nursing education. Communicate clearly, appropriately and respectfully with the patient, family, and members of the health care team. Attitude and behavior that conveys respect and dignity of all persons. Able to establish professional, safe, inclusive and respectful relationships. Independent and shared accountability in a just and trusting culture. Compassionate, empathic and caring attitude. Basic use of technology and competency in computer, clinical electronic device use, and electronic documentation.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
