Position Information Position Number P02565 Position Title Laboratory Technician Division/Portfolio Health and Social Development Department/Program Portfolio Dean's Office (P5) Location Kelowna Other Flexible Work Options Your Opportunity Under the limited supervision of the Dean, Health and Social Development , and the general supervision of the Health Department Chairpersons, the Laboratory Technician sets up and maintains lab and general equipment in the Health Labs; is responsible for equipment repair, troubleshoots and optimizes equipment; organizes maintains inventory, and purchases supplies and equipment; maintains knowledge in current technologies and supports instructional staff in usage; researches medical technologies and best practices within labs; maintains documentation of regulatory compliance. Functions and Duties 1. Responsible for set-up, take-down, and clean-up of labs. Staging and re-staging simulation labs between clinical groups.
2. Under the direction of the College Professor or Vocational Instructor, prepares solutions and laboratory supplies
3. Is available for priority labs as determined by the Department Chairs, to ensure there are adequate materials to perform the labs; ensures the safe and correct operation of equipment
4. Maintain health equipment such as computerized mannequins, medical beds, and other health lab supplies; Ensures supplies and equipment are in alignment with current practice environment
5. Troubleshoots and repairs lab, simulation equipment and fidelity equipment, within abilities. Communicates and organizes support resources for needed repairs and upgrades; places work requests to IT Services and Facilities when required
6. Coordinates the use of shared lab equipment between Health departments; Coordinates and completes the maintenance and cleaning of work room areas, nursing lab, equipment and supplies
7. Coordinates and completes the re-stocking of lab and simulation supplies. Procures laboratory materials by sourcing supplies and equipment including off campus purchases and samples
8. Coordinates and maintains organization of inventory of equipment. Maintains tracking of equipment inventory, including dates purchased, costs, and tentative re-order dates.
9. Conducts and coordinates lab safety inspections
10. Complies with standard health and safety practices
11. Ensure safe storage of materials and the safe collection, transportation, handling and disposal of hazardous waste
12. Travels to all campuses regularly to maintain lab inventory, equipment, and for lab support as needed.
13. Participates in Lab Tech meetings and program department meetings as needed
14. Perform other duties as required Education and Experience 2 years of post-secondary education in a related field required. A valid class five driver’s license is required. A minimum 2 years related experience is required. Healthcare and/or nursing experience preferred. Skills and Abilities - Able to perform work of a routine nature with minimal or no direct supervision
- Able to lift and move lab equipment (up to 30 pounds)
- Must be able to travel between all campus locations regularly
- Demonstrated inventory management skills
- Basic laboratory and computer skills; ability to learn new software
