Summary

Reporting to the Operations Accountant , the Operations Accountant is accountable for providing accounting and transactional support for a project or group of projects. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining project accounting processes, in accordance with company policies and procedures, to ensure clear, accurate, consistent, and relevant project financial information on a timely basis. The role is focused on executing the work and developing technical skills while gaining experience around managing and delegating tasks. The Operations Accountant is a representative of the Operations Accounting function and is responsible for maintaining strong relationships with the Project Managers and providing key support for projects.

Essential Functions Execution

Transactional Services

  • Perform general transactional accounting processes, reconciliations, and month-end procedures. 
  • Administer subtrade contracts in adherence with company policy.
  • Prepare owner progress billings (including change orders), ensuring complete, accurate, and timely billings. Provide all necessary backup.
  • Responsible for complete timekeeping entries and the creation of regular LEMS reporting, in-line with owner requirements and compliant with union agreements and labour standards.

Cash Management

  • Monitor and ensure timely accounts receivable collections and deposit of payments.  
  • Support and provide project input for consolidated branch/business unit weekly cash flow forecasts.

 

Planning and Process

Standards, Process & Controls

  • Apply knowledge of company policies, procedures, and internal controls at the project level, including project setup and cost accounting.
  • Apply knowledge of professional accounting standards, including revenue recognition and accruals. 
  • Apply knowledge of government, Provincial/State regulations, and taxes to ensure compliance at the Project level and requests support and clarification as required. 
  • Apply documented accounting process to ensure efficient, effective, and consistent end-to-end processes.
  • Possess awareness of Governance and Compliance frameworks and applies internal controls as instructed.
  • Contribute to the deliverables for audit work requirements (external & client) for projects.

 

Financial Accountabilities Organizational Impact• Provide contributory financial support to a project or portfolio of projects with project revenues up to $25M and annual project revenues up to $50M.

 

Client Focus 

Operations Financial Support

  • Demonstrate an understanding of JV/Project contract terms and conditions in relation to project setup, billing requirements, costing, tax compliance, and labour standards/rates.
  • Support Operations for Contract Management and Administration including: New Entity/JV/Project setups for AR, billing, and costing.
  • Prepare project cost reports to ensure costs are accurately allocated to projects.
  • Prepare accounts receivables, subtrade, and change order reconciliations.
  • Contribute to monthly project reviews and job cost forecasting as required.
  • Support Operations with financial understanding and competencies.

  • Understand the importance of management reporting, budgeting, and forecasting for projects.

Education, Experience and Knowledge
  • Degree or Diploma in Commerce/Business/Accounting or a related field.
  • 3 - 5 years relevant accounting experience.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail. 
  • Deadline oriented.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good understanding of Project Accounting principles and practices.
  • Basic technical accounting proficiency in billing and cost accounting. 
  • Developing analytical skills.
  • Experience in Construction, Engineering or Heavy Manufacturing Industries is considered an asset.
  • Basic understanding of the construction business and what factors drives profitability.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems; SAP is preferred.
  • Awareness of UAT testing for systems upgrades and enhancements.
  • Basic working knowledge of financial and management/cost accounting systems.
Working Conditions
  • Most of the work is completed in the office. 
  • Some travel to site work locations, if necessary, may be needed
