Halifax Regional Municipality, Canada Dalhousie University Full time
Department/Unit

Faculty of Medicine - General

Location

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

About the opportunity

Head, Department of Emergency Medicine
Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine, Nova Scotia Health (Central Zone)

About the Opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University and Nova Scotia Health are jointly recruiting a new academic and administrative leader for the University and Central Zone Department of Emergency Medicine. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and accomplished emergency physician with proven leadership, vision, clinical and academic credibility to lead the clinical and academic mandate of this dynamic department.

Nova Scotia Health is the largest employer in the province. More than 23,000 employees, 3,000 physicians and 7,000 volunteers combine to provide care at more than 45 facilities throughout the province. The Central Zone provides core health services to 500,000 Halifax region residents (50% of the population of Nova Scotia) and tertiary and quaternary acute care services to residents of Atlantic Canada. The Central Zone (CZ) Department of Emergency Medicine (CZ-DEM) functions across multiple sites in the CZ: the QEII Health Sciences Centre (QEII=HSC) in Halifax which is the major academic, tertiary, and quaternary centre for the maritime provinces; the Dartmouth General Hospital (DGH); Cobequid Community Health Centre (CCHC); Hants Community Hospital (HCH); and Tri-Facilities.) The QEII Health Sciences Centre is the principal teaching hospital affiliated with Dalhousie University, and a centre for health care research.

Responsibilities of the Head also include Emergency Medicine educational programs and research at the IWK Health Centre which serves as the tertiary care referral centre for Maritime children, youth, and women.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is an integral part of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University and a leader in tertiary clinical service in the Maritime Provinces. It is committed to excellence in assisting patients to achieve their optimal level of well-being through dynamic and comprehensive programs and services, including clinical care; education of undergraduate and postgraduate students, other health professionals and the public; promotion of, and participation in, continuing medical education activities and leadership in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge through research.

The role of Head requires dynamic leadership and vision in clinical and academic domains, together with leadership skills to effect excellence in clinical care, education and research within available resources, and to align strategically and operationally within an integrated health system. The incumbent must be a strategic systems level thinker with excellent interpersonal skills to negotiate, nurture and leverage opportunities that maximize productivity through collaboration, partnership and integration of academic and clinical practice.

The Head position is a five-year, renewable, limited term appointment. The Head position is subject to renewal for a second five-year term, conditional on satisfactory annual performance evaluations and a positive review of the first term as Head. A Continuing Appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine will also be offered to the successful applicant.

Experience and Qualifications

The successful candidate will have an MD Degree or equivalent, hold or be eligible for medical licensure in Nova Scotia and hold or be eligible to sit for certification in emergency medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada, or equivalent.

To be considered for this role you embody the principles of accountability, transparency, and fairness. You are an experienced academic and clinical leader, team player and outstanding communicator and you will use your skills and experience to create a positive and effective environment to enable an excellent care and learning experience. In addition, you have the ability to balance and achieve alignment between the academic mandate of the department and the NSH’s strategic directions. Finally, it is essential that the candidate bring a breadth of experience and proven leadership related to issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

Dalhousie University commits to achieving inclusive excellence through continually championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The university encourages applications from Indigenous persons (especially Mi’kmaq), persons of Black/African descent (especially African Nova Scotians), and members of other racialized groups, persons with disabilities, women, and persons identifying as members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community.
