Mississauga, Canada Independent Electricity System Operator Full time

INDEPENDENT ELECTRICITY SYSTEM OPERATOR (IESO)

Requisition ID: 19793 Location: Mississauga, ON (Hybrid) Status: Regular Business Unit: Information & Technology Services

Why join us?

You’ve got great skills. And you want to use them in an organization where you know what you do every day matters. We get that.

We also know that ensuring Ontarians have access to affordable and reliable power doesn’t happen by accident. So we give you the tools, flexibility and support you need to achieve your goals, and development opportunities to help you grow. You’ll thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment that values your unique skills and experiences – and recognizes that when you do better, we become even better too.

Who we are

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.

The opportunity

The primary function of the Senior Specialist, Data Modeler, is to translate complex business data into useable computer systems. This is primarily accomplished through analysis, assessments, and building conceptual, logical, and physical data models, and by partnering and collaborating with business users. This role will also be responsible for helping to develop any data governance requirements and defining standards/privacy requirements related to data modeling and the broader field of data management.

What you'll be doing

Data Modeling:

Design, develop, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models tailored to the unique needs of the electricity industry, ensuring scalability, performance, and data integrity for databases, operational data store, data warehouse, data marts, and data lakes on target platforms, in collaboration with business groups. Optimize data models for performance, scalability, and efficiency, utilizing techniques such as indexing, partitioning, and denormalization, as necessary. Identify the architecture, infrastructure, and interfaces to data sources, tools supporting automated data loads, security concerns, analytic models, and data visualization. Ensure data models adhere to industry standards, privacy and regulatory requirements.

Analysis:

Conduct thorough analysis of business requirements, data sources, and existing systems to identify opportunities for data model optimization and enhancement. Identify and assess various data associated problems such as system configuration and integration on multiple platforms. Conduct data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and insights. Work with business units to identify relevant data components for business solutions.

Data Governance:

Support operationalizing data governance policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards, including data privacy and security regulations. Research, design, and establish data modeling standards to ensure consistency, reusability, and maintainability across projects and teams. Establish and steward the processes and procedures required to maintain traceability between all data sources and business interactions. Facilitate the creation of data quality requirements to be applied to all data sources. Establish procedures and controls to ensure the defined data quality requirements are applied to all data sources across the enterprise. Define methodologies and approaches for implementation of data modeling to enable effective use of the enterprise’s information assets for business intelligence, predictive/reactive analytics, business rules, data warehouse and data mart solutions, data migration, ETLs, backup and archiving. Provide expertise and guidance on best practices for data modeling, metadata management, and governance within the electricity industry. Implement metadata management strategies to ensure data quality, consistency, and lineage across systems and processes.

Documentation:

Create comprehensive documentation for data models, including entity-relationship diagrams, data dictionaries, and metadata, to facilitate understanding and promote knowledge sharing. Design, establish, maintain, and report on key performance metrics internally as appropriate. Prepare and maintain all documentation related to data modeling, including processes, procedures, standards, frameworks, instructions, etc. Collaborate with Solution Architects, Information Architects, business process stewards, and IT solution stewards to create, deliver, and maintain necessary documentation.

Collaboration and Communication:

Work closely with cross-functional teams including data engineers, analysts, and business partners to understand data requirements and develop models that align with corporate and business objectives. Foster a culture that “values data as an asset” within the IESO. Partner with other organizational IT architects (Solutions, Enterprise, etc.) to provide expertise, guidance, and content to address data requirements and ensure alignment within the enterprise data management strategy and standards.
