The Opportunity


Reporting to the Manager, the Coordinator AIS 24/5 RN is responsible and accountable for the application of current theory and the nursing process in the delivery of family centred patient care consistent with the philosophy, objectives, vision and mission of the IWK Health Centre.  The Nurse works within a multi-disciplinary team to provide care to youth and their families who have chronic and persistent mental health disorders with serious/profound functional impairment and/or youth who are harmfully involved with substances and/or gambling, or who may present with concurrent mental health disorders.  The Nurse is a member of an interdisciplinary care team, providing holistic, comprehensive evidenced based care to meet the needs of individuals, families and/or communities. The Nurse provides leadership in nursing assessment, and the planning, implementation and evaluation of patient/family care for the purpose of promoting, maintaining or restoring health, preventing illness, injury, and disability.  The Nurse provides care in collaboration with the patient and family, other nurses and health team members throughout all stages of health and complexities of illness. The Nurse builds professional relationships with other nurses and health team members to support the work of a strong interprofessional team and provision of quality patient/family care. The Nurse ensures the goals and needs of the patients and families are prioritized and individualized, using nursing knowledge, critical thinking and clinical judgment. The Nurse engages in independent, interdependent and dependent functions to provide healthcare focusing on comprehensive assessment, patient/family education, and coordination of care. The Nurse draws on their knowledge and experience to foster a positive learning environment that supports safe and independent professional nursing practice.  The Nurse will support professional development and growth, the acquisition of new clinical skills and competencies and the transition of new graduates and new to mental health nurses into the mental health nursing specialty.  The Nurse in collaboration and support from the Clinical Leader of Operations and the Manager, will assume the roles and responsibilities of Role Model, Teacher/Coach/Facilitator and Guide.  The Coordinator AIS 24/5 RN works with the Clinical Leader of Operations to support the efficient and effective operations of the AIS 24/5 Unit by assisting with the planning, organization and directing of clinical care. The Nurse pursues excellence in care, teaching and research through a spirit of inquiry, discovery and innovation, leveraging our reputation and influence to advocate for health. The Nurse practices according to the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses, the Nova Scotia College of Nursing Standards of Nursing Practice, specialty standards as applicable and the policies and procedures of the IWK.

Hours of WorkYour Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required. Candidates with commensurate experience and education will be considered.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN).
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience required in youth mental health nursing; 5 years preferred.
  • Experience in AIS 24/5 Unit preferred.
  • Charge Nurse experience required.
  • Experience as a Nurse Coordinator at AIS preferred.
  • Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS) Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate, required
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention certification required.
  • CNA Certification in Mental Health Nursing an asset.
  • RNPDC Program in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability and skills as a clinical preceptor required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to Family Centred Care required.
  • Demonstrated leadership, time management, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with families and other health care team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to function in and manage multiple priorities within complex systems required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility with proven, excellent organizational skills.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers’ license and willingness to drive program van required.
  • Competency in other languages considered an asset.
