About the School of Trades & Skills

The School of Trades & Skills is dedicated to creating the next generation of skilled trades workers. Working closely with industry, the School provides learners with education in a variety of trades and apprenticeships using the newest equipment. The School is also home to the Olds College Brewery. Fields of study offered within the School of Trades & Skills include: Brewmaster and Brewery Operations, Hospitality and Tourism, Trades, Apprenticeships & Pre-Employment, Transitional Employment Program, and Farrier Science.

Purpose of Position:

Olds College is currently seeking an Instructor in its Hospitality & Tourism Management program on the Olds College campus for a short term contract. The successful applicant would provide instruction for Mixology and International Spirits, Wine and Beer, where students are introduced to spirits, wine and beer from various regions of the world, inventory management, and must complete ProServe certification. The anticipated start date for this opportunity is January 2, 2025 and ends on April 30, 2025. 

Key Job Functions:

Plan and prepare for instruction of liquor service legislation, liability and Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) recommended practices, methods to maximize beverage sales and profits, beverage production techniques, liquor product knowledge, and apply computer concepts and technology to the hospitality and tourism industry

Delivery of in-class and practical instruction, addressing various learning styles and needs relative to course content, including practical skills in bartending duties with an emphasis on mixology.

Evaluate and report on student progress

Work with other College departments to facilitate and support learner success (for example, accommodations)

Create a learning environment that encourages student engagement and success

Be accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success

Monitor classroom supplies and tools inventory

Perform various tasks to support student success:

First point of contact for student concerns

Monitor student performance and behaviour

Submit appropriate reports and forms as required

Maintain confidentiality and security of student information

Learn and implement technology and teaching tools to enhance the educational experience when appropriate

Perform other activities related to instructional assignment such as coordinating activities within a program or programs, and participating in College development initiatives

Collaborate with colleagues to scaffold skills within courses and programs to create an exceptional student experience

Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:

A post-secondary degree or diploma relevant to the subject matter of the course(s) and 3-5 years work experience in a career occupation relevant to the subject matter of the course; or a combination of work experience and/or industry certification in a career occupation relevant to the subject matter of the course(s)

Knowledge, skills, and/or training in instruction/teaching

Knowledge and skills in current technology applications relevant to the program and subject matter content.

Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)

Skills and experience with low-stress animal handling techniques

Experience with International Students would be an asset (for example, diverse cultural and learning needs)

Actively promote and reinforce practices that prioritize the well-being and security of all individuals at Olds College, show a proactive attitude towards safety measures, continuously striving to enhance safety protocols and procedures to ensure the highest standards of protection, collaborate with colleagues to instill a culture of shared responsibility and accountability when it comes to maintaining a safe and secure work setting
