Position Title: Specialist, Ethics and Compliance

Team and Location: Risk & Controls – Calgary, AB

Position Summary: 

The Specialist, Ethics and Compliance, reports to the Manager, Risk & Controls – Transformation and is pivotal in ensuring adherence to Parkland’s standards across the Company’s operations. This position requires a detail-oriented professional who can work independently and demonstrate tact and diplomacy while handling sensitive investigations. In addition to conducting (confidential) whistleblower investigations, the Analyst / Senior Analyst will engage with business teams to support and further develop Parkland’s ethical culture, review and enhance policies, procedures, and controls, as well as develop and implement training and awareness campaigns to uphold a culture of integrity and transparency within the organization.

As a Parkland’s Risk and Control team member, the successful candidate will also gain exposure to the wider Governance and Enterprise Risk Management practice areas.

Key Responsibilities:

Whistleblower Investigations

Lead and/or perform as a team member, thoroughly and independently investigating whistleblower complaints, ensuring compliance with Parkland’s Code of Conduct and legal and ethical standards. Build teams of cross-functional personnel and external consultants, as required, to ensure investigations are conducted with appropriate skills and resource capacity. Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to gather evidence, analyze data, formulate recommendations for corrective actions and follow up on the remediation status of corrective actions. Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with the utmost discretion throughout the investigative process. Prepare comprehensive reports documenting investigative findings, conclusions, and recommendations for management review and action. Provide guidance and support to management in implementing corrective measures and preventive controls to mitigate risks identified through investigations.

Governance and Risk Advisory

Contribute to the oversight of FCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act), Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act (CFPOA), and other related controls to ensure compliance with anti-corruption regulations and mitigate associated risks. Review existing policies and procedures related to ethics, compliance, and whistleblowing, recommending enhancements that ensure continuous improvements and alignment with regulatory requirements and best practices. Develop and deliver training programs and awareness campaigns to educate employees on ethical standards, reporting procedures, and the importance of whistleblowing in maintaining organizational integrity. Stay abreast of relevant laws, regulations, and industry trends pertaining to whistleblower protections and compliance requirements, ensuring Parkland's practices remain current and effective. Tasks may also include supporting other Risk and Controls activities, including but not limited to governance, risk management, and internal audit, to foster a comprehensive approach to risk mitigation and compliance assurance within the organization.

Qualifications and Skills: 

Educational Background:

Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field. Professional certifications such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) are preferred.

Experience:

Experience in performing investigations and working across governance risk and compliance areas.

Skills and Abilities:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively. Ability to build strong relationships within the team as well as within the business; Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze data, identify patterns, and draw meaningful conclusions. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also functioning effectively as part of a team. Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Willingness to travel occasionally to Parkland locations across Canada, the US, and the Caribbean, as needed.

Technological Proficiency:

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
