The Day Camp Counsellor will instruct, plan, implement and supervise the summer day camp program as well as supervise children. Within the context and mission of the Salvation Army Oshawa Temple, work cooperatively with the Youth Ministries and Outreach Coordinator, in all aspects of the summer day camp program. The Salvation Army Oshawa Temple Day Camp seeks to provide excellent children’s programming.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Implement the day-to-day operations of the program, which includes (but is not limited to) recreational games, crafts, Bible lessons, and other scheduled events. Supervise and interact with and support all day camp campers. Work cooperatively with the Youth Ministries and Outreach Coordinator, church staff and volunteers in all aspects of the program. Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers.

General Accountabilities

Perform other relevant duties as assigned, i.e., set-up, and camp cleanup. Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff. Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers. Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually. Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information. Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures.

Written and Verbal Communication

Document process, and reports as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems.

Reporting

Create and maintain list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes. Support external reporting requests as needed.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week. Working environment is in a day camp setting both indoor and outdoor in generally agreeable conditions with the following exceptions, exposure to tantrums and noise. Ability to lift/move up to 29 lbs. This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for long periods of time.

Normal hours of work: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break. Some flexibility in scheduling is required. The hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Completed a minimum of grade nine (9).

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

Prior volunteer and/or work experience working directly with children in a day camp setting preferred. Current, valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certification is an asset. Have own computer with reliable internet connection, as file access and meetings may take place online.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

Strong leadership, planning and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to change. Ability to learn quickly and use initiative. Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution. Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and the ability to exercise good judgement. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently, and effectively. Able to help support other camp staff with children’s individual behavioral needs. A desire to be creative and innovative showing initiative with limited supervision. Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member. Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation. Be a Problem Solver – Remain calm under pressure and deal with any situation wisely and selflessly and anticipate problems and opportunities and develop effective solutions. Undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry etc.).
