Job Description

Position Summary: 

The Black Affairs Coordinator supports the Black Affairs Commissioner in fulfilling the mandates of Black affairs at SSMU. Through their role, the Black Affairs Coordinator will conduct research and identify structural inequalities within the SSMU as well as contribute to the implementation of long-term, sustainable improvements. Furthermore, they will work in direct collaboration with the Black community across the university, whether it is the various Black student groups or faculty and staff members. 

Responsibilities 

Act as the secretary of the SSMU Black Affairs Committee, and participate in recruitment efforts for the committee.  Attend regular meetings of the Black Students’ Network when Black Affairs Commissioner is unavailable.  Identify structural inequalities and racialized frameworks within the SSMU and contribute to long-term, sustainable improvements, as required; Conduct research that will enable advocacy for political and organizational change within both the student body and the McGill University administration Draft governance documents that will facilitate the administration of the Black Equity Fund Review the applications to the Black Equity Fund, support applicants and present applications to the SSMU Black Affairs Committee.  Help the Black Affairs Commissioner in providing consultative services to the broader Society; Help draft a SSMU Policy on Black Solidarity by conducting appropriate research  Identify barriers to Black student success at McGill and facilitate campaigns which target and overcome those barriers; Review research published in matters that related to the SSMU Black Affairs mandate.  Publish research on matters relevant to Black Affairs via reports or popular education material.  Support the Black Affairs Commissioner in email correspondence as well as with outreach and support for racialized students and BIPOC-oriented student groups; Work to implement the Black Affairs Newsletter;  Contribute to the end-of-year report to the SSMU Legislative Council;

Qualifications Required

Strong research abilities;  Financial acumen is an asset; Connection to local Black communities; Ability to mobilize Black and non-Black communities; Knowledge of SSMU and McGill governance structures is an asset; Knowledge of high-profile student activism at McGill is an asset; Diligence and impartiality in the execution of duties; Organized with attention to detail; Ability to make fair and equitable decisions under pressure; Strong communication skills both in English and French an asset;
