ORGANIZATION: The BC-CfE is a world-renowned HIV/AIDS Centre with innovative, low barrier approach to healthcare delivery in clinical practice and an integrated group of research concentrations in Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Trials, Population Health and Epidemiology, Health Economics and Professional Education Programs. A multidisciplinary team of clinicians including Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers and Peers and researchers including Health Economists, Epidemiologists, Clinical Researchers, Statisticians, Programmers, and Data Analysts work collaboratively to improve the health of British Columbians with HIV and communities facing socio-economic barriers in accessing healthcare.
JOB : Within the Epidemiology and Population Health program, the Research Assistant (RA) assists the research group in the implementation, execution and evaluation of the study “Indigenous Circles Through the Black Box of Big Data; Bridging, Building, Sharing and Connecting Research Together.” The RA will assist in the coordination of and preparation of meetings, liaising with the Building More Bridges research team, and providing support with the coordination of the Voices of Wisdom Gatherings which aim to include land-based and cultural activities.
This project aims to establish the Building More Bridges in Big Data Partnership by building a team of Elders, Peer Indigenous Co-Researchers, Indigenous community members, knowledge brokers, non-Indigenous researchers, clinicians, and relevant stakeholders to develop recommendations/best practices for big data HIV research that is in line with key ethical issues of Indigenous data sovereignty, self-determination, ownership and justice.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Engage with and develop a positive rapport with past and new members of the Building Bridges initiatives, clinicians, healthcare decision makers, Indigenous people living with HIV, community members and other relevant stakeholders to establish the Building More Bridges in Big Data Partnership Prepare meeting materials and arrange logistics for virtual and in person meetings; assist in the coordination and planning for Voices of Wisdom Gatherings which aim to include land-based and cultural activities Assist with transcription and thematic analysis after each Voices of Wisdom Gathering Keep internal team up to date with regular communication and updates via email, teleconference and zoom meetings Assist with knowledge translation activities including drafting reports, contributing to the best practices/guidelines documents, presenting at scientific conferences and co-authoring peer reviewed publications Performs other duties as requiredJOB QUALIFICATIONS:
University degree in health sciences or a related field; one to three years of previous research experience in Indigenous health or the health care field. Experience working with a wide range of stakeholders such as Elders, Indigenous community members, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, etc. Experience using PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar etc. Experience with thematic or qualitative analysisAn equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Skills and abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous worldviews and experience working with Indigenous peoples in Canada Proven knowledge and understanding of ethical considerations of health research with Indigenous communities and peoples Ability to work from an anti-oppression, anti-racist perspective Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous cultural safety in healthcare; familiarity with OCAP principles Demonstrated understanding of the social, political, and cultural context of BC and familiarity with the role of community in research Effective communication skills and ability to establish a positive rapport with team members Indigenous community engagement skills are an asset Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision Excellent time management and project management skills Effective verbal and written communication skills Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines Computer competency with Microsoft Office Suite, Reference Manager or related software, and familiarity with e-mail and InternetSTATUS: this is a temporary part time (0.50 FTE) position for a duration of 12 months, with possibility of extension.
