One on One Child Support Worker

The Position

The One-to-One Child Support Worker position in the Summer Fun program is an opportunity to assist Nation children (ages 5 and up) to access and participate in the program and provide positive mentorship and support. The one-to-one ratio allows for a specialized focus on the child’s needs, abilities, and goals. Children supported by this position are identified through their collaborative support team, involving their caregivers, Education and CMS support personnel.  

 

This position will be managed by the Wellness Centre Manager and Education Manager and under the general supervision of the Child Wellness Coordinator and other program leads. The One-to-One Child Support Worker will serve as a caring person in the child’s life and will make themselves available to listen, support, and engage with individual children they are supporting healthily.

 

The position is from July 2, 2024 – August 30, 2024. Hours are from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (Monday – Friday).

 

The Candidate:
  • Provide direct service support to children on a one-to-one ratio in the Summer Fun program.
  • Utilize and inform the child's Behaviour Support Plan to understand their needs, abilities, and goals so they can be supported to participate in the Summer Fun program.
  • Work alongside the Wellness Centre and Education staff to deliver the activities offered to the child in the Summer Fun program and provide adaptations as needed.
  • Support to ensure the child can safely participate in various activities in the Summer Fun program and provide alternative supported activities as needed.
  • Be a caring mentor to the child in summer programming, which means listening to their needs, supporting them to complete activities, and ensuring safety measures are followed.
  • Communicate with the Wellness Centre and Education teams about any feedback, concerns, or requests for support on a weekly basis.
  • Attend team meetings as requested.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:  

  • The minimum age requirement at the time of intake is 18 years old.
  • Must be willing and able to pass a criminal record check.
  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health concerns and behaviours.
  • An understanding of the needs and barriers of individuals with various abilities.
  • First Aid Certification.
  • Positive Behaviour Management Training will be provided.
  • Experience working with children in a recreation or education setting is an asset.
  • Must be available for work between Monday and Friday with occasional extended hours for off-coast trips.
