Job Description

Faculty, schools of medicine (including two regional campuses), nursing, rehabilitation science, and programs of midwifery, Bachelor of Health Sciences, physician assistant, graduate programs and postgraduate health sciences education. Equity and inclusion is an actively growing foundational portfolio within the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). The Senior Manager will be a will be a dynamic leader with experience and accomplishments in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-oppression (EDI and AO) in a complex organization, both strategically and operationally. Utilizing their academic, professional, and/or lived experiences, they confidently influence, connect, and partner across and beyond the organization to align leaders around EDI and AO objectives. The role calls for a leader with strong skills to translate big picture thinking into operational details in order to advance the mission and vision of the Office and Faculty. Experience translating strategic plans and goals into initiatives and projects will be essential. The successful candidate will have superior facilitation skills, and be able to engage leaders, faculty, staff and learners in complex dialogue with confidence and trust. Conflict resolution, mediation, and/or facilitation experience within the context of contentious local, national, and global social issues will be essential. The successful candidate will be comfortable dealing with ambiguity and a complex, multi-consulted group environment where they expertly navigate competing priorities independently. Having extensive experience with policy review and development, climate surveys, data interpretation, presenting to senior leaders, in the context of large complex organizations that are decentralized will be critical for the role.

The Senior Manager will be the primary contact for FHS equity initiatives, will support committees and working groups and will provide information and advice to internal and external partners, as directed by the Associate Dean, Equity & Inclusion, FHS. The Senior Manager will work closely with members of the University's central Equity and Inclusion Office and other key partners, including those across the Faculty, University and affiliated hospitals. E.G., Indigenous Health, Continuing Professional Development, HR and Faculty Relations, Education Services, Faculty Affairs, departments/schools, regional and distributed campuses and community organizations. Accountabilities

Strategic Leadership

Responsible for leading the design and delivery of the Faculty’s equity, diversity, and anti-oppression strategic priorities in support of the Associate Dean’s vison for the Faculty through the following:

Develops and leads EDI training and education for Faculty, staff and learners and assumes a key role in implementation of policy changes across the Faculty. Leads the development, planning and identification of complex and strategic equity, inclusion and anti- oppression initiatives identified by the Associate Dean and Faculty, researches best practices and trends, and obtains relevant feedback from internal and external stakeholders to continue to advance the Faculty strategies. On the Offices’ behalf, provides responsive and informed strategic consultation to the Associate Dean, senior leadership team regarding internal and/or external issues and/or opportunities that affect the Faculty and growth of the EDI and AO strategy. Works with the Associate Dean and senior leadership, internal and external partners and related committees in an advisory capacity, making recommendations and identifying and advancing issues for discussion that are relevant to the effective management of the initiatives. Supports the Associate Dean in addressing deeply complex EDI and AO issues across the Faculty by leading the development and implementation of policy tools, resources and frameworks which embed an EDI lens into policy and process. Manages and leads multiple, large-scale EDI and AO initiatives in collaboration with the Associate Dean and the Faculty’s senior leadership team to build a culture of inclusion.

Stakeholder Partner Engagement and Communication

Provides comprehensive communication and community collaboration through the following;

Co-leads and manages several sub-committees, task forces and working groups. Develops strategic partnerships and networks with individuals and organizations outside of the Faculty of Health Sciences and McMaster University to further FHS EDI and anti-oppression initiatives and strategic priorities. Participates in Faculty wide committees and associated working groups, and other University committees as required. Leads communication and engagement strategies, along with the FHS communications team, to enhance the visibility of FHS EDI and anti-oppression initiatives. Externally, alongside the Associate Dean, this position regularly engages with the media, government and key partners and must do so with expert knowledge, sophistication and skill, demonstrating high emotional intelligence and robust relationship management.

Operational and HR Management

Provides expertise in operational effectiveness, leadership, and direction for the day-to-day management of the FHS Equity and Inclusion Office through:

Being the first contact person for the Faculty of Health Sciences and community partners on day-to-day operations of the FHS EDI Office. Supervises staff that are hired into EDI embedded roles at the department or school level within the Faculty; including providing direction to align departmental and school initiatives to the FHS wide strategy, act as a coach and mentor, provide guidance and leadership. Sets fiscal priorities and develops annual operating budget; oversees development and management of multiple program budgets within the Office’s portfolio, ensuring appropriate financial and administrative procedures are in place. Assess long-term as well as immediate needs. Works closely with Faculty/University leadership in key corporate functions including policy development, strategic planning, project prioritization, and operations.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., Critical-Race Studies, Sociology, Education, Cultural Studies, etc.) 7-10 years of managing complex EDI (or related) portfolios and 5 years of management

Experience:

Demonstrated knowledge of human rights, diversity, accessibility and equity including applicable legislation. Demonstrated capacity to advance strategies, priorities, and action plans Experience working with diverse communities and demonstrated knowledge of racialized communities and equity seeking groups in Canada, including their histories, traditions, knowledge systems and contemporary issues. Knowledge and familiarity with the goals and strategies of historic and contemporary human rights and social movements, with a demonstrated ability to engage meaningfully with a range of social advocates and activists in community Lived experience as a member of a member of an equity-deserving group Demonstrated ability to set priorities and deadlines to ensure multiple projects and objectives are achieved in a timely manner Experience providing comprehensive research and analytical support to senior leadership teams and committees. Experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders.
