Senior Software Engineer (Python/Rust) - Toronto Validus Risk Management is looking for a financial software engineer to join our back‑end team. This team designs, implements and maintains the systems powering our award‑winning technology platform, Horizon, which provides trade execution, portfolio management and risk analysis for alternative asset managers. The back‑end team collaborates with quants, front‑end and platform engineers to grow Horizon. If you are passionate about financial markets and cloud‑native engineering, we want to hear from you. Key Responsibilities Engage with external stakeholders and clients to understand their needs and design solutions for capturing and integrating data for use on Horizon. Work closely with internal stakeholders, including Validus's quant, risk advisory and global capital market desks to understand requirements and propose new solutions. Build a strong understanding of FX and interest rate products, related markets and market data sources. Support ad‑hoc maintenance of our applications and scheduled processes. Implement cloud‑native solutions on AWS, ranging from HTTP APIs to event‑driven microservices utilising gRPC. Solutions are built in Rust and Python (Django/FastAPI). Design data models for the business domain of complex trades across multiple asset classes, using MySQL and MongoDB for portfolio data. Build performance‑critical systems written in Rust and contribute efficient, testable and maintainable code to our Python codebase with performance and observability in mind. Requirements Hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, mathematics, finance or a related field. Experience with financial or market risk modelling is a plus but not required. Abstract thinking and interest in designing financial object models. Experience with one or more modern programming languages; we primarily use Rust and Python. Experience with databases (MongoDB, MySQL, DynamoDB) or other database technologies. Experience with AWS is a plus but not required. Curiosity to explore new technologies. Preferred Qualifications / Experience Experience with financial risk management software or platforms. Knowledge of AWS computing platforms and services.
