We specialize in finding, developing, and publishing writers of literary fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, poetry, and drama, as well as works in translation. The Role House of Anansi Press and Groundwood Books are seeking a candidate to fill the position of Production Editor. This role will oversee select frontlist projects from first typeset pages through to printer’s proofs, as well as coordinate reprints and format conversions. The Production Editor will work closely with the Managing Editors and the editorial, design, and production teams to ensure that books are on schedule and error‑free. This individual is someone with excellent organizational skills who is unfazed at the prospect of juggling multiple projects with tight timelines and feels comfortable communicating about obstacles that may arise. We are looking for a team member with patience, diplomacy, and flexibility, who has an unwavering commitment to high editorial standards and an impeccable eye for detail. This position reports to both the Anansi and Groundwood Managing Editors. Responsibilities Project manage select frontlist titles through the production editing process (including copyediting, proofreading, page layout, indexing, and assisting with photo and permissions research), ensuring books are of the highest quality and ready for press. Coordinate the work on reprints and format conversions each season, including liaising with sales, marketing, publicity, editorial, and design to review any changes and updates. Circulate typeset proofs to authors and editors for review, incorporate all feedback and resolve any queries. Revise and maintain project schedules, negotiate deadlines, and promote awareness of key dates among the editorial and design teams. In consultation with the Managing Editor coordinate freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers, ensuring adherence to schedule and house style. Update title / spec information and ensure data integrity for each season’s assigned projects prior to publication. Communicate proactively with the Managing Editor to ensure each project is on track. Troubleshoot solutions to any issues. Secure CIP data for all titles. Copyedit and proofread promotional materials, learning resource materials, and seasonal descriptive copy. Coordinate the work on ALT text generation each season, including liaising with freelance copywriters and the production team, and writing and copyediting image descriptions as needed. Provide support to the editorial and design teams as needed. Experience and Qualifications Two years’ experience in book publishing or a related field, in an editorial or production-editorial capacity. Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills, with an in-depth knowledge of editing symbols and standards, and proficiency with the Chicago Manual of Style. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments, working well under pressure, and consistently meeting tight deadlines in a fast‑paced environment without sacrificing quality. Sound knowledge of the publishing industry, with a strong understanding of best practices in design and copy layout, file management, production process, and printing conventions. Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to work efficiently, both independently and as part of a team that spans all levels of the organization. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word (track changes), Outlook, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro (onscreen markup). Understanding of accessible publishing workflows is an asset.
