We are searching for an experienced Legal Counsel with expertise in Property and Casualty Insurance. The successful candidate will provide strategic legal guidance on complex claims and regulatory matters that influence corporate operations, strategic legal initiatives, and provide expert guidance on a wide range of insurance-related matters. Synopsis of the role: Create the foundation for the organization's first in-house legal counsel position, and legal infrastructure. Establish key policies, compliance structures, and risk management framework. Provide legal advice on complex claims, coverage issues, and regulatory compliance. Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, policy wordings, and corporate documents. Support claims and operational teams with legal risk assessments. Monitor and interpret changes in insurance legislation and industry regulations. Liaise with external counsel and regulatory bodies as needed. Assist with corporate governance and internal policy development. Mentor and guide staff as the team grows. Requirements: A Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario (or equivalent provincial law society), with eligibility to practice law in Canada. A minimum of 10 years of experience, with significant focus on Commercial Property and Casualty Insurance, either in-house or at a law firm. Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills. A collaborative and inclusive mindset, capable of working effectively across different business units. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Extensive experience in commercial P&C insurance law, including claims, underwriting, and regulatory compliance. Familiarity with Ontario and federal insurance regulations, FSRA guidelines, and industry standards. Knowledge of corporate governance, privacy laws (e.g., PIPEDA), and risk management frameworks. Familiarity with legal tech tools, contract management systems, or digital claims platforms. Interest in emerging risks such as PSA, ENO, DNO, cyber liability, and climate-related exposures.
