Senior Software Engineer, Operations (Mainframe/UNIX) Join to apply for the Senior Software Engineer, Operations (Mainframe/UNIX) role at Sun Life. Job Description The Group Benefits/Group Retirement (GB/GR) support team in Application Operations Services is looking for an Application Developer with at least 8 years of Mainframe application support, analysis, and development experience. The successful incumbent will have strong technical and problem‑solving skills, and the ability to work independently. As a member of the team that supports mainframe applications, responsibilities include application support, responding to service requests, debugging and problem solving, security reviews, maintaining stability, requirements analysis, performance and tuning, application development and unit testing, writing technical specifications, as well as participation in transitions to support and design reviews. The desirable candidate will show initiative, be accepting of responsibility and be accountable for results. Responsibilities Provide ongoing support of Group Retirement Services mainframe application systems in production, including responding to service requests, problem analysis, resolution, escalation and reporting as necessary. Identify and participate in improvement, system renewal, stability, upgrade, and Disaster Recovery projects. As a senior member of the support team, interface with developers, infrastructure teams, system designers, business system analysts, application analysts and testing specialists to deliver high‑quality solutions and maintain a stable, high‑performing application environment. Create and maintain supporting documentation. Participate in review processes – Business Requirements, Test plans, Design reviews, etc. – to understand the application and provide input from a support perspective. Design, develop, code, test, and debug programs for small projects. Provide on‑call and after‑hours support on a team rotation basis. Qualifications Minimum 8 years of IT experience in mainframe application support and development. University degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience. Strong working knowledge of COBOL, UNIX‑Micro Focus COBOL, Syncsort, IMS, DB2, JCL, SQL, Focus, APIs, and Agile Deployment Tools. Excellent understanding of mainframe application problem‑solving and debugging. Solid understanding of distributed application packaging, deployment, and performance management. Strong leadership, planning, organizational and consulting skills. Ability to communicate effectively to technical and non‑technical audiences and work with business partners as well as infrastructure teams. Self‑starter, fast learner and ability to multitask. Experience with .Net, Java and/or other technologies is an asset. Understanding of the ITIL service framework is an asset.
