Job Title: Ombudsman Organization: Legislative Assembly of Ontario / Assemblée législative de l’Ontario Overview: The Ombudsman is an independent, impartial officer of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario who investigates complaints from the public about Ontario government services. The Ombudsman is appointed by order of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for a term of five years, with the option to be reappointed for one further term. The role investigates any decision or recommendation made or any act done or omitted in the course of the administration of the broader public sector, including Ontario government organizations, municipalities, universities, school boards, French Language Services and Child Protection Services. Issues for review may be raised by individuals, Members of Provincial Parliament, or by the Ombudsman’s own motion. The Ombudsman Act sets out the powers of investigation, which include issuing summonses, requesting documentation, requiring evidence under oath and inspecting premises. All provincial government organizations must cooperate with the Ombudsman’s investigations. Responsibilities: Investigate complaints and conduct inquiries in accordance with the Ombudsman Act. Issue summonses, request documentation, and require evidence under oath. Inspect premises and other necessary actions to gather information. Prepare annual reports and special reports as appropriate, and submit them through the Speaker to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Apply formal dispute resolution and mediation skills to assess and resolve complaints. Qualifications: Track record of making equitable decisions with sound judgement. Strong communication, collaboration and leadership skills. Experience managing complex organizations and leading sensitive inquiries. Practical knowledge of law, investigatory procedures and formal dispute resolution. Experience in a demanding, unionized environment is advantageous. Fluency in both official languages is an asset. Compensation: Within the Deputy Minister salary range (MIN $280,343 – MAX $408,944) applicable from 1 April 2025, including a defined benefit pension and group health care benefits.
