Overview

The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation is hiring a Red Seal Chef to lead the creation of a unique dining experience celebrating Indigenous-inspired cuisine and locally sourced ingredients. As the head of kitchen operations, you will oversee menu development, budgeting, staffing, and daily food preparation, ensuring a sustainable and community-focused culinary destination. In this role, you’ll collaborate with local suppliers, regional partners, and the hotel team to deliver a seamless food and beverage experience. The ideal candidate is a skilled leader with proven kitchen management experience, a passion for sustainability, and the ability to thrive in a remote setting. 


The ideal start date for this position is  May 2025


Location

The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation, a territory located on the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan, and execute a menu that highlights Indigenous-inspired cuisine and locally sourced ingredients.
  • Ensure food quality, presentation, and consistency align with the restaurant’s vision and standards.
  • Oversee all kitchen activities, including scheduling, food preparation, and service for lunch and evening meals.
  • Manage costs and budgets, including menu pricing, food costs, and staff wages, to meet financial goals.
  • Handle inventory, ordering, and supplier relationships to ensure the availability of fresh, sustainable ingredients.
  • Build partnerships with local suppliers, regional vineyards, and community organizations to source ingredients and develop complementary offerings.
  • Work with the hotel manager to coordinate bar operations and ensure cohesive food and beverage service.
  • Recruit, train, and lead a kitchen team, fostering a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to staff, encouraging growth and skill development.
  • Collaborate with contractors and the hotel team to ensure the kitchen meets licensing and operational requirements.
  • Contribute to the design and setup of the kitchen and patio dining area, ensuring functionality and guest comfort.
  • Maintain health and safety standards, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations.
  • Act as a representative for the restaurant, promoting its role in transforming the region into a culinary and cultural destination.

Minimum Qualifications (Education / Training / Certifications):

  • Red Seal certification in culinary arts-required-  Bachelor degree (completed 4 years education) in hotel Management preferred.
  • Proven 3-4 experience (required ) in kitchen management, including menu development, budgeting, and staff supervision.
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and experience maintaining compliance with health and licensing standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with suppliers, community partners, and regional stakeholders.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills to oversee kitchen operations and meet service goals.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable, with the ability to thrive in a remote setting and work independently.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with experience mentoring and training kitchen staff.
  • Commitment to sustainability and a carbon-neutral approach in sourcing and operations.
  • Willingness to contribute to the development of a new dining experience and work collaboratively to transform the region into a culinary destination.

  • A valid Driving license and access to a transportation vehicle.
