Position Overview BDC Capital’s Defence Deep Tech Venture Fund, part of BDC’s Defence Platform, invests in early‑stage ventures that develop deep technologies for defence or dual‑use strategies. The Fund focuses on Quantum, Foundational AI, Photonics, Autonomy, Electronics, and Materials, and acts as a leader in the Canadian VC ecosystem by connecting stakeholders across the deep‑tech value chain. Associates join the team as early specialists in investment finance, leading parts of the evaluation process for potential deals and managing BDC Capital’s current portfolio. Challenges to Be Met Deal Sourcing Maintain involvement in investment community associations and stay abreast of industry developments. Analyze portfolio of partner funds to identify promising follow‑on opportunities and track upcoming fund raises. Perform market research and scouting to inform the Fund’s investment strategy. Deal Making Lead due‑diligence workstreams on companies’ market, competition, management, sales, products, cap table, and other relevant aspects. Determine and validate performance metrics, creating valuation models, forecasts, and financial pro‑formas. Draft Investment Memos, focusing on financial and market sections. Support Partners during presentations to the Investment Board. Analyze technical documentation and/or collaborate with consultants to evaluate technologies. Conduct reference calls with competitors, clients, industry experts, and current or former employees. Develop and maintain industry, market, and business trend subject‑matter expertise. Portfolio Management & Support Monitor portfolio performance versus forecasts and models, escalating opportunities and issues to management. Occasionally participate in investee board meetings as an observer. Assist investees with introductions to potential suppliers, investors, and employees. Platform Building Manage deal pipeline, quarterly/bi‑annual reports, and financial analysis. Support team members during the investment development stage. Ensure research files, business plans, and other information comply with BDC’s policies. Document new and existing investments, monitor amendments and disbursements, and perform financial forecasting. What We Are Looking For Typical Background 3‑5 years of experience in structured financial analysis and technical expertise, likely from finance roles (venture capital, private equity, investment banking, accounting), operator roles (tech startups, industry leaders), or advisory roles (consulting, law, corporate strategy, corporate development). Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Economics, Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). Other degrees are acceptable with strong analytical skills. Post‑graduate degree or equivalent certification is valuable (MBA, STEM master’s or PhD, CFA). Technical Knowledge Proficiency in Excel for building financial models with sensitivity analysis and scenario modeling; other analytic tools are a plus. Strong problem‑solving and structured communication skills. Effective use of MS‑suite applications (Word, PowerPoint). Ability to contribute to executive presentations and compose clear, concise Investment Memos. Technical skills with broad application (coding, chemistry, electronics) and operational knowledge of technical industries are assets. Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
