The Technical Safety department ensures the safety of products and project solutions developed and deployed by the Urban Rail Signaling business line while maintaining compliance with safety principles, industry standards, and best practices for the development of safety-critical systems. The Project Safety Manager coordinates Technical Safety activities for products and projects to ensure safe solutions designed for testing or deployment to a customer. The role is responsible for demonstrating that the solutions comply with relevant processes, policies, legislation, standards, and regulations. Key Accountabilities Prepares safety plans and safety cases (generic product, generic application, specific application, design, and implementation) to demonstrate that the solution is safe for its intended purpose. Participates as a core team member of the project team and interfaces with senior management. Acts as the interface with ISA and customers, defines follow-up action plans, and ensures execution to address findings. Defines, identifies, and coordinates the project safety team to implement safety strategies. Ensures delivered solutions meet company safety requirements and contractual safety requirements. Oversees project safety activities through schedule management, critical path oversight, and risk/opportunity management within scope, budget, and timeline constraints. Manages team workload demand to meet project requirements and supervises allocated resources in executing hazard and safety analysis activities. Ensures compliance with the company’s Technical Safety processes and project safety plans. Supervises Technical Safety analyses, design reviews, RAM (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability), and Hazard Log management. Anticipates and escalates technical or resource issues encountered during projects. Key Requirements B.Sc. in Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, or a Business-related domain with demonstrated experience in the technical field. Minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior technical role in train control systems or automation within aerospace, defense, automotive, medical, or nuclear industries. Strong understanding of systems engineering, software engineering, and functional safety. Detailed knowledge of system safety lifecycle, safety design concepts, and risk analysis. Demonstrated experience in System Safety, Validation, Safety Planning, Safety Approval, Certification, RAMT Engineering, Software Safety Assessment, Hazard Management, and Safety Cases. Proficiency in MS Office and Project Management tools/software. Excellent technical writing, analytical skills, and communication. Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal. Preferred Qualifications M.Sc. in Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. Knowledge of railway signaling systems, train control systems, fixed and moving block signaling principles, and relay-based/computer-based interlocking designs. Extensive experience with safety standards (e.g., CENELEC, IEC, IEEE, MIL) and techniques such as HAZID, HAZOP, PHA, SHA, OSHA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, FSA. Familiarity with Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and/or Solid-State Interlocking (SSI) systems. Membership in Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEO) or Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE). Thank you for your interest in Hitachi Rail.
