VP of Engineering

As VP of Engineering, you’ll lead Nexl’s global engineering function building, scaling, and inspiring a high-performing team that delivers exceptional products at pace. Based in Sydney, you’ll work closely with our CEO, Director of Product, and other leaders to shape our technology vision, scale our architecture, and execute against our ambitious product roadmap. Our Tech Stack Frontend: React & TypeScriptBackend: Ruby on Rails with GraphQL, and Python with WebSockets & Protobuf Job requirements Proven senior engineering leadership experience in high-growth B2B SaaS companies. Strong technical background in modern web application architecture, ideally with experience in our tech stack or similar. Experience leading distributed or remote-first engineering teams at scale. Track record of delivering complex products to market at speed, balancing quality and velocity. Ability to set clear technical direction, while empowering teams to own their work. Strong background in hiring, coaching, and retaining high-performing engineering talent. Skilled at collaborating cross-functionally and communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience with agile methodologies, continuous delivery, and test-driven development. Commercially minded, with an understanding of how engineering decisions impact customers, revenue, and growth. Bonus: Experience working in legaltech, professional services, or industries with high standards for security and compliance. Job responsibilities This is a role for a technical leader who can operate at both the strategic and hands-on levels — setting direction, building capability, and ensuring we deliver quality, scalable software that drives customer impact.What you’ll own & do: Lead and Scale Engineering : Build and grow a high-performing engineering organisation, fostering a culture of excellence, ownership, and continuous improvement. Drive Strategic Delivery : Partner with Product Squads and GTM leaders to execute Nexl’s strategic roadmap with speed, quality, and alignment. Own Core Engineering Functions : Take leadership of Enablement, Foundation, and Platform Squads, ensuring they deliver scalable systems and enablement for product teams. Set Engineering Standards : Along with the CTO, define best practices across architecture, testing, CI/CD, security, and development workflows. Build Organisational Capacity : Recruit, retain, and develop top engineering talent while nurturing the next generation of leaders. Accelerate with Technology : Champion the adoption of modern tools, automation, and AI to boost development velocity and productivity. Ensure Cohesion & Alignment : Keep Squads aligned to shared goals, standards, and processes, driving consistency and focus across the org. Promote Transparency & Accountability : Establish clear reporting and visibility into progress, ensuring commitments are met across all teams. Develop People & Careers : Support engineers’ growth through coaching, mentoring, and structured development plans that increase engagement and retention.
