Senior Cloud Engineer – Modern App Platform Engineering team The role of the Senior Cloud Engineer operates within the Modern App Platform Engineering team. This valuable member will create platform components and services for broad enterprise use. Key Responsibilities Develop, manage, and maintain cloud platforms, services, and components to enable safe, enterprise‑wide use of common cloud functionality. Provide Level 3 support. Take technical ownership and leadership of enterprise cloud product(s) or a complex part of a larger product, including design, software, and process needs for ongoing operations. Design, implement, and refactor code. Participate in design discussions focused on scalability, design, and implementation best practices. Ensure software, programs, and applications are developed and/or configured to meet high availability, integrity, and reliability requirements. Collaborate with lead engineers and architects on solution design, task scoping, and estimation. Participate in planning, retrospective, stand‑up, and other Agile ceremonies. Build and operate highly available and scalable software and infrastructure. Mentor junior cloud engineers. Engage in peer review and quality control in a flexible and fast‑moving environment. Required Skills and Experience 5+ years of relevant work experience. Enthusiasm for cloud transformation and cloud platform, component, and service development. Strong development experience across multiple languages (e.g., Java, Python). Full understanding of the software development life cycle and related technologies. Domain expertise in cloud platform features and capabilities. Proven experience in cloud development on Google GCP or Microsoft Azure. Ability to solve ambiguous, novel problems requiring teamwork. Expertise in either a modern technology stack, platform building, or Scotiabank’s legacy systems. Full‑stack experience in product development. Experience leading small technical teams in delivering production solutions. Strong written and spoken communication skills, especially to technical audiences. Experience delivering enterprise systems and collaborating with multiple cross‑functional teams. Knowledge of software design patterns, infrastructure architecture, DevOps, and security considerations. Awareness of design for scalable, enterprise‑level software systems (code and infrastructure). Experience with relational databases. Understanding of the software release process (environments, binary repositories, CI/CD). Attention to detail and high standards for quality. Desire to learn, grow, and drive high performance. Passion for quality craftsmanship that delights users. Ability to write and maintain documentation. Investigating, analysing, and resolving system problems. Experience with Kubernetes, containerised applications, and Terraform (required). Experience within Canadian financial institutions (benefit). Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or related discipline.
