Project Engineer Specialist (Stations) BC Hydro Base pay range: CA$127,900.00/yr - CA$161,800.00/yr Job Location: Burnaby, BC Employment type: Permanent Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/week) No. of positions: 2 About the job: This position is for a Project Engineer Specialist within the Stations Project Engineering team in the Transmission Project Engineering division. Our Project Engineering teams perform an integral role in the delivery of infrastructure projects at BC Hydro. Project Engineering team members work with cross‑functional teams to ensure that project designs and installation are safe, effective, and meet the requirements of BC Hydro. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working on a wide variety of projects, each with its own unique scope, assets, stakeholders, risks, and technical aspects. While the work is based out of Burnaby, you’ll get to travel to BC Hydro’s facilities across British Columbia and occasionally to other parts of North America and internationally. In the Project Engineer role, you will manage the engineering component (Scope, Schedule, and Cost) of large and/or technically complex projects which typically have a considerable profile, complexity, and risk. Projects may be designed entirely within BC Hydro, entirely outside of BC Hydro, or a combination of both. Typical projects include transmission substation upgrades or new transmission substations, which may also include transmission lines and associated protection and communications systems. What you’ll do: Perform the Owner’s Engineer Lead role on projects where some or all of the engineering work is done by a third party such as an outside consultant or equipment vendor. As an Owner’s Engineer Lead, you will coordinate and lead the internal review and acceptance of work designed by a third party. Work closely with project managers to manage the scope, schedule, and cost of the project. Identify and manage project technical risks, including system integration with the existing transmission system and other issues. Work with functional managers to establish the engineering teams on your projects, and develop design and review plans, strategies, schedules, and resource requirements. Coordinate and oversee the development of technical specifications and drawings and may manage engineering consultant contracts. Work with Construction and Contract Management, Engineering teams, Quality Management, and Field Operations to ensure that technical support is provided during manufacturing, construction and commissioning and that technical issues are resolved in a timely manner. Make or review recommendations and other communications to management on complex project matters, including presenting to senior management and the executive. Coach members of your project teams to help them resolve issues or advance their work, and mentor others performing project engineer roles within or across groups. What you bring: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical (preferred) or Mechanical with relevant knowledge and experience in leading large and technically complex transmission substation projects, and registered or eligible for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC). Minimum of 10 years of progressive and comprehensive engineering experience, with a primary focus on the design of transmission substations and associated equipment. Experience across the project life cycle from conceptual design through testing and commissioning is an asset. Candidates with less experience may be considered at a corresponding position level. Minimum of 4 years leading and coordinating multi‑discipline design on medium to large projects, preferably similar in nature to BC Hydro in terms of size, complexity, and stakeholders. Candidates with less experience may be considered at a corresponding position level. Ability to understand the impact of the project on the transmission system and operations, and to understand the interactions and priorities required to deliver multi‑discipline projects. Excellent leadership and communication skills, including writing, required to advance the project, coordinate, and influence various parties within BC Hydro and with external delivery partners and stakeholders. Good understanding of Project Management processes. Experience managing Owner’s reviews of multi‑discipline engineering work completed externally is an asset. Strong knowledge of BC Hydro’s project delivery processes and design practice is an asset. Site experience on large construction projects such as hydroelectric generation stations, transmission substations, or transmission lines is an asset.
